Contaminated, Should I just Toss?
    #28385589 - 07/05/23 04:40 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Hi this mushroom block I started growing looks to have gotten cobweb mold and a gnat infestation that has resulted in droppings everywhere and a few sightings of the mature gnats flying. There seems to not be much progression, and besides for maybe 3g of weird mushrooms that grew from the bottom it doesn't seem to have any visible pins or strong mycellium growth to hold off the contamination. Should I just toss? Thank you!

This block suffered from wrong conditions at first.
Should have been better fruited straight in the bag.
I can´t see any contam signs.
If you really need to,
give that block a good dunk and maybe try a water tub.
Next time better coat that block in f.e. coir
to prevent the surface from drying out.

Totally agree, I tried fruiting early before colonization reached 100% cause it was stalling for a very long time and yes that's true I will have to do a casing of that next time to prevent moisture from leaving too fast. But yes there is unfortunately 1000 droppings from the gnat that are visible on top surface and there is gray cobweb mold starting to take hold between the mycellium at the top. Overall I don't know if a dunk would work as it would just expose it to more contams that it can't even currently handle rn. probably only a matter of a day or two before things spread so unless there is a way to salvage a flush I should probably cut my losses right?

:whathesaid:

That thing looks dry AF. Not seeing any mold in the photo but myabe it's even too dry for the mold to develop properly.
Is that the AIO bag that had problems colonizing?

Goatriders advice is good, you can follow that

OR

You could dunk/submerge this thing for a couple of hours which will hopefully kill the gnats, drain, put it in a clean big ziplock bag, throw some coir on top, close it and poke holes in the bag like fahtster explains it in this thread.

And yes thank you for your reply it is indeed incredibly dry I attempted to not mist for several days to calm down the staleness and high moisture levels to combat the gnat I saw and the slight cobweb mold developing. Will definitely try your solution of drowning the gnats via the dunking that will also restore the moisture, and put into a clean sandwich bag with some holes and coir for top layer. Appreciate the help!
