I confess I also don't know what's the deal with that guy and why everybody is talking about him. Only thing I know is he got arrested in Romania for human trafficking, and that's it. Don't need to know any more, dgaf

It would be a place where everyone can fill out a simple explanation of their process type of media and cultures. We all have shit we do differently but I think it would be cool to see how everyone cultivates. Example, I don't use a flame in my agar work, I make single use throw away punches.
Thoughts?

i think this would be sick! there are a lot of little details of other people's work that i've adopted into my own after hearing it, & some of those little tips are things i didn't learn for months or years of doing cult work, so could definitely be informative. plus i think it would be cool to see the diversity in practices & where things overlap between people.

Andrew tate isn't a clinical psychologist who tought at two of the most prestigious Universities in North America. They're not even remotely comparable.

Listening to lay people critique highly qualified professionals in their field because their politics dont align is like listening to noobs claim that Pastywhyte is a noob because he doesn't recommend Uncle Ben's

Anyways, back to cult.

@sock: single use punches seem just as legit as single use loops or cell spreaders, which are the only kind I use:rockon:

Hell yeah bro fuck wokeness πŸ™„. Having degrees doesn’t justify being a shitty human being.

How do you get the agar out of punches? I imagine a straw but like do you blow it out? My tiny mind can’t comprehend it.

The agar remains on the plate, you lift it with a scalpel.

Yeah my brain isn’t comprehending this. Gonna have to find a video or something.

Just saw a video so now I’d have to flame sterilize the punch and the scalpel. I guess it’s slightly easier than just cutting a triangle? Idk

The punch just cuts, it doesn't pick up pieces (ideally, although sometimes it will). You punch as many pieces as you need in one go then grab your scalpel and use that to transfer pre-cut pieces.

It's important that w/e you're using has more than just one opening, it needs a vent hole basically. So the pieces of agar don't suction up into it

I made one out of a ss straw
You can see how it cuts circles into the agar without lifting from the plate.

A plastic single use hole punch sounds an awful lot like a plastic straw πŸ€”

There is almost nothing I disagree with Jordan Peterson on politically or socially, but I can't stand him. I've always made my bed and don't need a cranky substitute for a dad. I'm glad he exists and is popular though. A lot of people do need a cranky non-commie substitute for a dad. Just not for me.

I also don't like that he says things as fact that are opinion, and even wrong opinion. I've heard several but one that comes to mind is about how people using helix designs in ancient art means that people innately understand the shape of DNA. People don't. That's just a design that exists in nature, especially in vines, and snakes mating.

Another Canadian, Ryan Long, does some recurring skits with funny parodies of Peterson:

While he does have some poignant and sound advice, especially for disenfranchised males lacking in easily accessible direction and guidance he’s unfortunately renowned for not backing what he readily admits are opinions with scientific fact, he certainly presents it intelligently so it appears that way but if he were talking mycology he’d be laughed off this forum in seconds, in his talks he literally starts with β€œI believe..” and β€œno study had been done on this..”
if I didn’t on the daily through my work have to deal with young males using him as a justification for belittling women I’d probably have a different view:shrug:
Anyway, here’s some frosty fruits to chill on

There's nothing wrong with stating opinions, especially if he's prefacing them as such. You can infer things reasonably without conclusive scientific proof. Making sure the listeners know there's no studies backing the claim is reasonable enough, imo. No idea about JP or what claims he makes, just saying that as a general statement.

Rogan would be an example of blasting out idiotic things with no proof and doing little to dissuade listeners from believing. I hate that guy.

Rogan's a stand up comic who isn't an expert on anything except fighting, and admits he's wrong often. He even jokes about it saying things like (paraphrased from memory) "Why would anyone listen to me? I'm best known for doing a show where we paid people to competitively drink bull semen and eat cockroaches."

JP is a college professor, that gives him authority and makes some people believe everything he says. He states options as facts, I'm not talking about his political thoughts, but things about the world. Like the DNA thing. He didn't preface that with "this is an opinion" or "some people think", he just stated it as fact, in between some other facts that are true.

JP said on Rogan that almost no people in the world die of starvation. That's absurd. (Might be true in the USA though, not the world). He tosses off gems like that often.

JP may have issued a statement something he said was wrong, but I haven't heard it. I've listened to Rogan a lot more though. Rogan has some very interesting guests, and I find him funny often.

JP says things like β€œSet your house in perfect order before you criticize the world" but he got addicted to drugs, which is about as far from "having your house in order" as you can be.

It's hard to find a list online of actual things JP said that aren't true, because they're always mixed in with political things he said, which are opinions and not truths, and as I said, I usually agree with his political opinions.

I usually don't talk about things like this on here, especially on a grow thread. It usually ends up with screaming or endless hijacking. I resisted for a few days, but now that all the kids are doing it, I'll jump in.

Funny: the one negative review on my reviews here is someone who argued with me about politics on the pub and lost. I was reasonable in the argument, he was not, and he gave me a negative review. HAHAHAHAHA.

Rogan absolutely is an authority figure to people. And despite not being a professor, he often seems to think he is. His platform reaches millions of people and is incredibly influential, whether he'd like to acknowledge that or not. "Why would anyone listen to me?" is a copout to taking responsibility. It's also entirely irrelevant because he 100% knows people do listen to him. He also brings on "experts" spouting complete bullshit unchallenged, probably because he essentially believes anything anybody tells him.

Rogan is almost solely responsible for the resurgence of fucking Bob Lazar, a massive fraud who was thoroughly debunked 30 years ago. He's worth 100 million, but can't be bothered to hire help to Google "bob lazar fraud evidence" or something beforehand? He can't probe with legit questions before platforming a known liar? If an obvious and proven liar like Bob Lazar dupes him in 2023, why would he ever be qualified to talk about anything at all? He isn't. Rogan is a dipshit and I lose respect for anybody who can't understand this.

When NDT was first on, he wasted like 90 minutes of the podcast talking about how the moon landing was a hoax. Sorry, but if you're in your 30's and still believe something like that, you are a moron. Being forced to admit you're wrong often, especially about ridiculous shit, isn't some great example of humility. It's not a flex. It's a sign you should shut the fuck up entirely because you're a gullible idiot whose bullshit detector is completely out-of-whack.

He admits he's wrong when he has the world's leading experts or astrophysicists sitting in front of him breaking down his argument right then and there... and sometimes even then he doesn't concede. He'll even try and debate actual experts on COVID despite being a complete fucking idiot with zero background whatsoever. Imagine all the times he's completely wrong, but nobody says anything or Jamie doesn't "pull that up" and reveal how idiotic he's being? And now he has Robert Kennedy Jr. on, another complete fucking idiot, free to spread bullshit vaccine disinformation again -- completely unchallenged. I can't imagine a more irresponsible civilian actively harming our society. And by civilian, I mean a regular person, not anyone not special enough to become a comedian (only 1000 people can do this according to Dr. Joe).

But if you think he's funny, we'll have to agree to disagree. Rogan is not what I'd call an expert on fighting, either, btw.

And again, my post you replied to was speaking generally about someone specifically saying, "There are no studies backing this, but..." before sharing opinions. You provided specific JP examples that weren't that. Any examples you'd provide of him spouting harmful and incorrect BS like Rogan, I'm on your side.

I Googled to find his quote on the starvation thing and he said "almost none" when asked how many people starve to death annually. It's 9 million per year. Obviously that's not "almost none" in a literal sense, but it's only 0.115% of the population. I don't think JP was saying "almost none" like it's 5 or 6 people each year. It sounds like he was trying to explain that it's not as huge of a problem as people seem to think. I also don't agree with highlighting his addiction to criticize him. His wife died and he apparently got addicted to prescribed benzos. That's Big Pharma you should be insulting, imo.

But yeah, off-topic so I'll end my contribution here. Please don't take this long reply as an attack on you, either. I just really, really dislike Rogan and how harmful his reach legitimately is. More of a PSA than anything.

Yeah, the thing is people can have great contributions to society right along with shitty ones, or along with being a flawed/shitty person in their personal lives. such is the nature of humanity and all that, obviously. Like jordan peterson has done some amazing things and had great contributions, he's also a hypocrite and transphobe and has made more cash grabby material lately. Even rogan had an era of much more level headedness and exposed people to a lot of interesting characters, id wager a lot of younger folks interested in mush cult right now were influenced by the first rogan and stamets interview. It doesn't negate their contributions/legacy when they go off the rails (except extreme circumstances) but it definitely showcases their humanity and enforces the truth that no one is perfect, and you really shouldn't put folks on a pedestal. And thus the importance of critical thinking and a rejection of herd mentality

Was literally just mulling this over myself as I’ve got a couple jars almost ready to go for my first pans tub grow and I think I’ll be sticking with the smaller tubs as I know I can get quicker evaporation in them to initiate pinning, but I’d love to hear if anyone has any experience with larger tubs also, or even if my reasoning re evaporation is off?

I used to watch/listen to JRE, mostly the science podcasts... Actual scientists like Brian Cox, which was one of the last episodes I watched.

Joe's overuse of that "I'm just a moron" excuse is pretty much the reason I stopped. He did actually believe it before but at some point it just became a meaningless get out of jail free card. Kinda like how reddit treats "for microscopy purposes only". This was way before any covid, anti-vax, interviewing presidential candidate bullshit.

It's too bad, I really enjoyed some of the guests but I can't deal with Joe interrupting or talking over people with doctorates in their field... to disagree with them on their field of expertise...
