Personal use only growers: what do you prefer, large infrequent grows or frequent/continuous small grow batches?

I just got back into this (the previous time being when I was in high school in the late nineties). Now that I’m “middle aged” or whatever the fuck you want to call early 40’s I don’t really know many others, really except for maybe 2-3 other people, that would really be interested in doing shrooms again (basically the same few people that I used to trespass with in pastures to forage for shrooms with back in the day… I reckon that’s a good way to get shot on sight nowadays… see, I even talk like an old guy now).
Basically, I’m growing for myself, and the rare occasion where I might have an old friend to come along for the ride. I don’t know really how much/often I will eat, I have kids/wife/job so there are some responsibilities that limit the time and circumstance appropriate for eating shrooms.
I do like the grow process and I have a natural enjoyment and professional background that has made the most Cadillac of automated fruiting chambers a certainty in the near future. That said, I hate “stuff”, especially big “stuff” that takes up space.
I’m a little torn between the idea of doing massive batches very infrequently (I have everything one can imagine to properly preserve and keep dried shrooms in ideal conditions for years) or doing small (think all-in-one grain/sub bag sized) continuously. I’m sort of leaning toward the small/continuous side of things. Even at “small” I’m predicting I’ll be growing them faster than I’m eating them. The other advantage of small is less big “stuff” laying around. Might even try other types of mushrooms if I’m outpacing my psilocybin habit. That said, there is some appeal to doing a massive grow, being completely set for 2-3 years, and moving on to other interests in life until the next thing. I know there’s debate on how well they keep but I’ve done a lot of research and am confident that I can keep them for 2-3 years just fine, so please, even if you personally disagree on this, that’s a debate for a separate thread.
I began thinking about this after already starting 3 large tubs, so if I do decide to go small, I guess I’ll be starting off with a large stockpile, the best of both worlds I suppose.
Surely there are plenty of people in similar situations where they only really need to grow a small amount for personal use. I’m curious which approach you others favor, large grows infrequently or continuous small grows (like 1 grain bag sized or 1 shoe box tub).

Large, frequent batches
A couple of PF cakes could more than satisfy your needs every few (3-6) months without any serious setup or space. Most people here grow as a hobby, so the methodology is skewed a little towards the enthusiast.

I would start small -- say shoebox -- and grow that way continuously for 3 to 6 months. Dial in your tech. Then decide if want to continue continuous growing or go big. One benefit of continuous growing is that you have fresh shrooms when you want to trip. Fresh taste much better than dehydrated to me.
All that being said, one good shoebox box run with 3 or 4 flushes could run me for a year. I trip on a 6 week cycle w/ 2.5 to 4 grams per go.
Let us know what you go with!

i vote small, frequent grows. if you’re like most people on this site you’re gonna get addicted to growing them pretty quickly it’s too much fun. you’ll likely have more than you’ll ever know what to do with either way

I am in the same exact boat as you. I went with constant small grows and always have enough on reserve incase one grow doesn't turn out well. I enjoy the process and learning how to make each one a little better. Good luck with whatever you choose!!

If it is just for personal use and has to be as easy as possible then I'd go with PF-tek and wouldn't even bother to birth the cakes but top fruit with a baggy on top or temporarily repurpose a tub to use as Water-Tub FC. You could easily grow enough for a year or two depending on your consumption.
Anything beyond could give you copious amounts of mushrooms and exceed your personal demand manifold in a very short time once you get the hang of it. You could grow a lifetime supply with a few tubs. Only really makes sense if you enjoy cultivation so much that you want to make it your hobby and invest the time space and money to get to that point.
Since I have discovered that +6 year old mushroom powder is still kicking my ass I do throw most of the stuff I grow away and I only grow half the year really just for the fun I'm having and the beauty of the mushrooms.

on the upside, if you find you do love cultivation for its own sake like the rest of us nerds here, there are plenty of gourmet/medicinal/novelty species to keep you occupied! actives are a great way to learn the basics (& it’s cool to grow your own drugs let’s be real) but fungus is an infinitely fast form of organism. it’s just as cool, fun, & rewarding to grow your own foods & supplements

I grow a large batch about once a year. I PC about 10 quart jars with oats and then S2B in monotubs. Two months growing gives me enough for 10-12 months. I find its easy to grow during the summer months when its warm out and a little more difficult in the winter controlling the temperature. Summer is just easier to set it and forget it.

I had some productive grows last year that I still use. I am a light consumer, 1-2 g dried weekly. The cultivation aspect is an irresistible challenge. Trying various pans, now at 6 months with only a lot of educational failures. I am also at the moment running some apeu plins to grain because it's fun!

We are about the same age and same boat.
I bet you have almost everything you need already in your kitchen. Some mason jars, a few tupperware containers and some large Ziploc is all you need for a small grow that will grow you plenty for the year or 2 depending on use frequency. If you want to do cakes you need a dozen jelly jars if you want to do cakes. The bottle tek is nice also. You can eliminate the jars and the bottles stack in each other and the ziplock containers are handy for everything.
The things that take up the most space are the pressure cooker and dehydrator. Your pretty much going to need them whatever way you decide to grow. (The pressure cooker was the only thing I needed to buy)
The consumables you going to use all up anyway. Grain, verm, casing, etc.
I haven't done bulk monotub yet and most likely wont. I can grow more than enough for my wife and I to take and giving away a bunch to friends with very little.
I enjoy the process more than the results.....it is relaxing and rewarding.
