The recycled material thread update
    #28381174 - 07/01/23 09:10 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

So lately I've been interested in trying to use materials that get thrown away or recycled that can be picked up for free. I wanted to do a cardboard substrate but been a little lazy on getting it. I did get some paper and I threw something together with a little coffee, water and lime. I spawned to a gallon ziplock bag. I will post pictures as it progresses or doesnt progress.

Update: 7/6/23
Paper is at about >=95% colonized and hasn't shown any contamination. I have another extra quart I will use to do another one with 25% coffee this time and see what happens.

Update: 7/8/23
I noticed that there was a little trich growth in the tip corner of the bag. I'm guessing that the coffee that was the source of contamination. I might experiment more with coffee but for now, I will do with just paper next time.

Coffee as an additive and its free, lime to raise ph to prevent contamination

And why would lime prevent contamination?

Coffee contaminates so easily, its too nitrogen rich

It adjusts the ph of the substrate, coffee is acidic like someone mentioned, so I added it to adjust for that and cubes dont mind a basic substrate whereas competitors thrive on acidic substrates. Competitors being trich, bacteria, what have you. I use lime in my straw for the same purpose, it staves off other shit and gives cubes the time to fully colonize. Hopefully the explanation helped

Didnt help, its not the acidity thays the problem, its the nutrient content of Coffee

Have you tried having axenic spawn instead of contaminated spawn? Then you don’t need additives that likely contribute very little to nothing.

OP You might be getting confused by cold lime pasteurization:shrug:, soaking substrates in a very high ph water bath to knock back contamns, however the sub is drained and rinsed before it’s spawned. I know it’s been said and repeated that higher ph is more favorable to the fungi we’re trying to cultivate and less favorable to molds and other contaminants but I’ve never seen that to be the case. I know in my experience with outdoor grows on woodchips I’ve constantly had better results with more acidic substrates amended with peat Vs. substrates that have been amended with lime or wood ash, but that’s all been with woodlovers. We make a lot of wood ash at home, and have used a lot of lime in the garden and lawn, but the fungi have convinced me to keep it away from them. However a lot of good growers do add lime to peat when using it for casing or substrates for cubes. I just haven’t seen any side by side trials.
In the spirit of the thread title you may want to check out this thread Endless sub
And this one Ash tek is sorta similar to what your doing.
In your case all we will get to see is if you grow some mushrooms or not, but please keep the thread updated even if the only thing you end up growing out of it is mold, hopefully you get a good bunch of cubes though. Good luck

For straw I follow what rogerrabbit says. As far as coffee goes I only used 10% of the weight of the paper used. So far it looks like it likes the environment. Spawn has already recuperated in 24hrs, the straw doesnt appear to have recuperated yet. Weather it fails or not I'm fine with it. I only used a at of spawn that qas left over so I dont feel like I'm losing anything but time at this moment
