Anyone any idea what species this alien invader is?
    #28380949 - 07/01/23 03:45 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Hi, yesterday I saw suddenly 3 heads appear through the perculite. They reached about 2.3 cm above it the perculite, and were about 1cm in width. The next morning (about 12 hours later), these invaders were 15cm and already released their spores.

Anyone any idea which species this is?

I don't recognize this species. The species I spawned the substrate with, should have been PS Cubensis, the result of a mix of 'McKenna' and 'Ecuador' spores. I got the syringes from the same supplier, and they are high quality. Not sure whether there actually really is a difference between their McKenna and Ecuador spores... I think that is more of branding...

To me these do not look like cubes, though possibly they actually are (?).

Possibly of interest for the determination:
1. I messed up with the water content in the substrate (it was very dry). It took about a month (after adding spawn to substrate) before I saw the first cubes appear, and they were miniature shrooms. Like 3cm mushrooms. Cute and potent, but not regular. I looked in this forum and read that that probably was due to dryness of the substrate. I was not aware but indeed it was very, very dry. Which was the result of the very long spawning phase and my inexperience and lack of testing the substrate wetness (PS: the ratio spwan:substrate was about 1:15 (the other rice bags with spawn appeared contaminated, and I already mixed the good spawn bags with the substrate, so there was no way going back)).
2. I put the substrate in water for an hour or so, and let the excess water flow away again. And then I redid that, because it still appeared to be a bit dry.
3. I then replaced the tub back under the light and attached it to the fan-hose.
4. A few hours later I saw the 2.3cm aliens. (PS: it could be that they were already present, but the perculite covered them before, and that the perculite cover was washed with the watering).
5. I think a few hours later they were 3.5cm, but I have no pictures of it, so, not ptaken into acount as fact.
6. After spraying of water mist, the aliens appeared dark brown, which made me hope these were actually cubes instead of an invader. Actually also no picture of it...
8. The next morning (about 12 hours later) these aliens were 15cm and already released their spores.
9. At this moment of writing (let's say an hour after the morning discovery), the heads are dissolving into black slime.
10. The spawn in the tub is a result of my own and first experiment of 'liquid culture from spore syringe'. And some rice bags had trichoderma contamination (and those were destroyed and not put in the substrate)
11. Substrate contains of: straw, cow manure, coco husk. Cow manure possibly was the UAP?

That's not how any of this works

Don't make shit up on your own, just follow established TEKs.

:whathesaid:

OP, Why do you have a perlite layer on top?

The TEKs here from TCs are there because they work. Controlled and careful experimentation was done by the TCs and others to find the perfect methodologies.

Random experimentation without full knowledge of the mechanics of all processes involved is just throwing crap against a wall and hoping it sticks.

Anyway, like mentioned above, you’ve got Inky Caps.

You're gonna have a real bad time trying to grow mushrooms if you can't pay attention to basic instructions and just wing it.

Thanks @Throwaway!

Now I think of it: this instance of species might have travelled hundreds of kilometers with me, because I stayed in a different region of Europe, where months ago I saw this species in abundance. Possibly some spores in my gear or clothes travelled with me back home.

Where I live in the city; never see this species. Still could be from around here.

Also, the cow manure could have carried it, but it then did survive a few minutes 900Watts microwave session.

I see there are both edible and poisonous ink caps. I will now further think about to destroy this batch or not, or how to remove the spores. at least now I tested both PH and the moistness: bot are pretty good.

Ink caps grow literally everywhere you didn't bring it with you. You don't need to measure pH or w/e the fuck moistness is.

You need to follow instructions

Well, for me that perlite on top works pretty good. I tested with and without multiple times, with consistent ventilation system, different season, amount of spraying, etc. For me it works pretty good and actually better than without. Or at least I get a recurring minimum BE of 180%+. For me that is good enough.

Pics or it didn't happen.

Right now your perlite is covered in mold and growing ink caps

You think that brown stuff is mold? Isn't it something the mushrooms 'sweat out'? Could be mold, but wasn't aware of that.

Yes, hehe, pic here of a batch some time ago:

Yeah, that's mold

You got some mushrooms but nothing to write home about. I got better yields off tampons. Try some established TEKs.
