11 days of vacation & fully colonized grain: send it or wait? (UPDATE: NEW DILEMMA)
    #28358700 - 06/13/23 05:18 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

UPDATE: SEE JUNE 29 POST!

Some unfortunate timing has me in a pickle. I have a fully colonized grain bag (fully colonized since at last week really, no doubt about it). I would have gone to bulk already but I’m going away for 11 days (starting this Saturday). I would love to mix it 1:4 with bulk and have it perfectly ready to fruit when I return but I’m unsure whether things will happen too fast and it will somehow fruit and be too old when I return or somehow dry out, get contaminated, or any other number of things where I’ll be powerless to deal with while away. My bulk/fruiting container is a tub with large holes near the top and smaller near the bottom, both covered with filter material at the moment. Not sure what will happen if I wait either, seems pretty wet in the bag (the syringe was sticky and when it finally moved I had inoculated with like 8cc by accident). I have some other very recently inoculated bags that might be near ready by the time I return, so that tempts me a bit to go ahead with the one that’s fully ready, but I’ll still be immensely disappointed if I waste a good bit of substrate and lose all the time it took for this first bag of grain. This would be first grow, not counting my attempt in the 90’s while in high school (I think I even had an account here back then), so im pretty pressed to get both a successful batch and quickly, which seems to be two opposing characteristics. My backup bags are not far along enough to say for sure that they’ll be successful.

Any recommendations? If I mix with bulk and leave my tub ports covered with the filter material will it likely just colonize but not fruit while I’m away?

You can always keep it in the fridge until you come back if you're unsure you can leave it to colonize and have it be okay.

You can leave it in the fridge for about a month or so and it'll be totally fine. Don't try to rush or be too impatient about getting the first flush, just let the mushrooms do their work and it'll come on its own time.

I'd definitely spawn to bulk, highly doubt that in 11 days it would have colonized and fruited and died lol.

Spawn to balk, go enjoy ur vacation. Don't stress about the mushrooms they will be fine

Don't listen to any of my advice cuz I ended up with extreme HBP and nearly died. So I'm a literally an idiot. Don't let me guide u lol. I'm just trying to heal myself.. then I can be better for my family

I wouldn't spawn. Sounds like you did spores to grain and are using a tub that's not dialed in. Chances are high you'll come back to contam or bad conditions in the tub.

You should listen to the Way and their spidey senses.

If you had a tub that was dialed in then yeah spawn and go on holiday.

This part right here also has me inclined to trust Way with this one. 8cc is a lot of innoculant (more spore solution = more potential for contaminants) and being too wet is a warning sign that bacteria could be present. You may want to consider spawning inside the bag by not mixing it up and instead using your substrate to add a casing layer on top.

I should have mentioned, I sliced the bag at one point and put a few pieces of grain in agar, no contam showing on the agar so I think it’s pretty darn clean. I don’t see any funky metabolites or anything, no zones where the mycelium hasn’t colonized, they seem pretty happy feasting on the grain, it’s a single solid white mass that seems to be slightly shrinking (presumably b/c the mycelium are feeding on it).

I have to make my final call soon. Strain is “Treasure Coast” if that matters in anyway, just a plain old cube. Also, the bin is one of those Max Yield bins (purchased while I build something to my own specifications), so while it isn’t personally “dialed-in” I would imagine it is somewhat proven for the purpose.

Additionally, I have 8 new grain bags I’m going to inoculate tonight, so some additional backups, albeit they probably won’t be ready to go right when I return from vacation. If this wasn’t my first grow that I’ve been wanting to get going for awhile now (my late 1990’s attempt was too long ago for me to consider it at this point) I wouldn’t be so pressed, damn I want to have these things soon.

With this additional information, any comments or changed opinions on what I should do?

Max yield bins are the furthest thing from dialed in from what I have seen on here. I'd still say wait until you get back so you can babysit your first grow.

Patience is always rewarded in this hobby.

That's just my take. Good luck either way.

29 JUNE UPDATE:

So I decided to leave the grain bag as is for the vacation mentioned in the original post. Now I am back from that vacation and facing a new dilemma. I can see at least a single half-inch pin in the bag. Problem is I am leaving yet again, tomorrow the 30th of June, returning on Independence Day (July 4, for you international folks). What should I do?

Crush that early bird pin mixing the spawn with my substrate (aiming for 1:3 or 1:4 ratio)? Will all my shit just fruit, poop spores everywhere, and be “old” by July 4th if I do that considering it already has a pin?

Just let it sit in the spawn bag until I get back? Then what, crush that pin and any others when I go to bulk?

Other options?

Pick the pin out and spawn it to whatever ratio you desire. 1:3-1:4 is good for axenic spawn, 1:1 - 1:2 for bacterial (if you post a pic of the spawn we can help you decide whether its bacterial or not)

It takes about 2 weeks give or take for fruits. So you should be fine until 4th of july. Surface conditions dont really show up until a week or so in when the top layer starts colonizing. (On that point make sure you reserve enough coir to put a thin top layer, if youre growing PE, it needs a thick compressed top layer to prevent blobbing)
