Grow bags and humidity
    #2837884 - 06/28/04 10:18 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Sorry to ask such a trite question to you experienced growers.  I recently bought a presterilized substrate bag with self-healing injector site.  Do I still need to make a grow chamber?  Will the mushrooms grow in the bag?  Are there any pros and cons to using this bag that you can inform me of?

If I do need to make the grow chamber and I am planning on using two Rubbermaid clear containers with a fish tank heater under the inner-most container, what wattage should I use?  I don't want to start any fires.

If I use a fish tank, how do I need to humidify/heat that?

If I need to build a grow chamber, I will be using the perlite method.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks :mushroom2:

How would it work if I used a heating pad in the incubator? How would I set that up?

Also, once the substrate in the bag is covered with mycelium, how do I birth this baby and how can I protect them from the bottom of the grow chamber?

Thanks for the help so far.

If your going low-tech you could just find a warm dark place in the house somewhere during incubation. You honestly don't need to incubate at exactly 84-86F, they will colonize even at 65F and lower, although much slower.

You can fruit directly from the bag. A method I would employ (particularly if it is a grain bag) is cut open the top when fully colonized carefully. Apply any of the common casing layer mixes to the top. Low tech would just be strait coir or strait vermiculite. Mash the substrate down in the bag removing the majority of the air pockets, and apply the casing layer about 3/4"-1" deep. Give it a light mist, seal the top of the bag up (leave the filterpatch intact, or add another from tyvek for greater air exchage), and place into light... Wait....

Just buy an aquarium heater and have a typical tub in a tub incubator, much more accuarate. Having a raised rack and a computer fan helps even out the temps. For a rack I use a medium guage fence from a hardware store. I folded up the edges and have a shotglass in the center to further support it.

This idea is very simple and sounds like it would make fruiting more plentiful.....But what if the person does not have a bag sealer at home? since it is pre-colonized substrate would clothes pinning the bag be enough to keep out contams while the bag continued to fruit?

Hees talking abotu buying pre sealed bags. Not sealing at home. If you want to seal your own bags without a impulse sealer youc an use hotglue, or posibly fold and flame sewal with a lighter as you can with baggies. But a $25-40 impulse sealer is well worth it, and you can use it for much more then sealing mycobags.
