Hekp with shoe boxes - mold?
    #28379144 - 06/29/23 03:12 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Hey all. Ive been lurking for a while now. I just atarted a few months ago and have had x2 successful harvests, though low yield...and several boxes failed. I think my failures are related to bacteria due to tqo wet spawn and substrate...so Im workimg on that.

I have 5 boxes that I spawned about 10 days ago. These were inoculated from a liquid culture syringe bought from a sponsor in wild bird seed. Im experimenting with different ratios of coir (only using coir, using Bodhista tek) with and without bag liners. Im concerned im dealing with various contams and worried about health concerns. Id appreciate several peoples feedback and thoughts on boxes and willing to answer follow up questions as necessary, or provide better pictures.

Nothing screams mold yet. Some of the surfaces seem to be too dry judging from the color of the coir but photos can be decisive. If you had a few harvests then start collecting spores if you haven't already.

Sounds like you are aiming for better yields so it's time to eliminate limiting factors and step up your game. Get into culture work and if possible do your own grain as well.

So far to me it looks like myc! Doesn’t mean I’m right by any means though if it starts getting thick and fluffy it’s probably mold but that looks like myc. Also I would recommend next time starting with Agar. Do a quick search and you can find tons of information and teks on here. When you inoculate grain with spores or presterilized culture you’re kind of asking for problems. Put your spores or culture to agar and transfer until you get a clean culture then transfer to grain! This will ensure a much higher outcome of clean spawn and once you have 100% clean spawn paired with straight coir at proper field capacity, it’s pretty much impossible to contam! (Not really but I’ve never had a shoebox contam and I’m at 50-60 tubs in my experience)

I would agree on the looking dry part. I'm also experimenting with the casing vs no casing layers. I figured I shouldn't mist until I see primordia though? Although Bodhista and a lot of other people I've read suggest going straight to fruiting conditions, so mist or no mist? :P

Also, what do you mean about doing my own grain? I PC my own WBS (and starting with whole oats, but those spawn jars have turned out horrible, lots of contams while my WBS I did at the same time are fine)

I tried to take a picture of the thickish/circular white fluffiness in the last picture as one of the spots that's concerning to me.

For the agar portion. I ordered the liquid syringe and then put that into several spawn jars, 4 liquid culture jars (didn't have a stir bar, only a rock...now I can't pull it out with the needles I have) My agar game and culture game need a lot of work though. The condensation from this no pour tek is crazy! I just ordered a spore syringe of pasty whytes strain and thai lipia from MMM. I put those on agar last night, so we'll see how that goes.

Thanks for the comments, keep them coming

Ah ok, was just assuming cause syringes and premade bags often go hand in hand and it wasn't explicitly mentioned in OP.

Fruiting at spawn is the what most people do these days and misting should be done as needed. Have a look at this post.
