coco peat and coco coir.... same thing?
    #28378847 - 06/29/23 10:21 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Accidentally bought "Coco peat" instead of coco coir...

Im using it for casing layer and the peat looks finer than the coir I've seen on teks, is it a problem?

if its fine how would I go about hydrating or pasteurizing it?

also how to check for trich

says its resistant to fungi i think i messed up

Be careful. Peat for gardening sometimes has Trichoderma added.

Better get the stuff for reptiles.

I would get proper coir without any additives.

Coco peat is often just coco coir, but as Yahra said sometimes they add trich, which is okay of you sterilize the coir

edit: it says its fungus resistant. No idea what that means, could just mean that its non nutritive which it is, could also mean it has fungicides in it

is there an easy tek to get rid of the trich "only" since this peat is already sterilized and I dont wanna  deprive its nutrients

There is no trich. It'd resistant to fungi cause it's an inert substrate which is why we use it. Our fungi get their energy from the grain and just squeeze water out of the coir

:0 so I should just hydrate the peat to field capacity and there should be no contam??

Am I overthinking this is trich even that deadly??

There are no nutrients per se in the coir, it's used merely as a water sponge for the mushrooms.
As posted above you don't need to pasteurize/sterilize it, however if you're as paranoid as I am get it to field capacity, put it into a quart jar then either:
A. Pasteurize it - stick a meat thermometer into the center of that jar, put it into a water bath (water needs to reach about 1/2-2/3 of the way up) and get the inner temp to 65-70C for an hour.
B. Sterilize it - pressure cook it for an hour at 15 PSI with a lid slightly unscrewed or with a filter on top.

Website and packaging doesn’t say anything about added trich or peat. They called it coir peat but there’s no peat. Maybe they’re trying to attract the peatoholics.
Looks fine. I’d use it as is.

I was so confused by the amount of pasteurising teks on here, urs sounds simple

I'm gonna go with this and add the results to my first ever journal in a few days

I'm pretty sure all coir is full of all kinds of mold spores anyway, unless it goes through some unintended sterilization process at the factory.

Even if it does come sterile, you spawn outside on a breezy day and there's an unfathomable amount of shit landing in your tubs and buckets while you're mixing stuff.

The pressing uses heat and it's where sterilization happens but yeah, considering the flimsy packaging some comes is and the fact that we spawn in open air shit is gonna get on there anyway. Good thing it's inert

Cool, I wasn't sure how they make it into a brick, but I figured it's probably not very life-friendly for whatever is in there.Like you said the surface is probably not sterile , I doubt they immediately wrap them. I mean it's an agro factory, not an iso certified clean room lol.

But yeah, all that shit goes out the window once you spawn. I swear the bugs are like fucking homing missiles to my coir buckets and tubs when I'm doing stuff outside.

What would we use without coir, is there anything else that's not nutritious but colonizable?
