Spawn bag oats can’t get things right
    #28378193 - 06/28/23 08:05 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

All pics are same spawn bag, in my eyes I see extra condensation ,the bottom of the bag has some grains that appear to not be colonized.  This is from t5 uniform agar. Shaked 3 days ago at 90-95% colonized bags are kept in a tote on tile floor just comfortable house temp. Toss it?

Looks like you are spot on. Lots of condensation. Probably bacterial. How are you prepping your oats?

Ok you should vent for 10 minutes minimum. I vent for 20 minutes. So load the PC with your jars and vent for 10 minute minimum then put you weight on and bring to 15psi(I do 17psi) for 2 hours. That's for qt jars. 3 and 5lb bags need longer PC times. I think it would be more like 3hrs for the 3lb bags. Not sure how long for the 5lb but I think it would be close to 4 hours. Double check the times on the quick answer thread Here
I also prep my oats by bringing a few gallons of water to a boil, then adding oats and letting them soak for 50 minutes off the heat. Let them dry for about a half hour and load my jars, cover in foil, then PC. Let it cool fully then close the lids all the way and shake. Oats are a bitch. I been using them for a year now and still have issues here and there. I'm probably switching to another grain soon.

Just wanted to do an update and if these go into the garbage or top fruit or whatever they seemed a little better today but I doubt it after looking at the pros. Small portion on all the bottoms that don’t look colonized

Your grains could be too wet, let the exterior dry more, and you will get a much nicer appereance and colonization of your grains. It is at least to me the most obvious and normal culprit - next I could think of is using LC on fully saturated grains, that will upset the balance in the same way.

Its widely underestimated how dry your grain surface can be, and still support full and healthy colonization. Ive yet to meet a single person starting out that struggled more with doing their grains too dry than the opposite. All I have introduced this to have thanked me for it and agree that its a important aspect of making the best looking and most easily to break up spawn.

You want the moisture inside the grain fully saturating the inside with max water - and you want _some_ moisture on the surface, not zero.

But you sure as hell do not need your corn, your millet, your oats, your rue etc - to have a glistening wet surface or have grains with wet rings around them - before prep. Or after.

If your prep is visibly good enough before PC, your PC cycle and method is adding water to them if they still look wet after 2-3 days.

Check out PC water levels, the water passability of your filters - your cooldown - bubbling up etc

There can be many reasons for why your grains end up too wet

The lazy quickfix for non starchy/sticky too wet grains, is to simply add sawdust which will suck up all the exterior water, and not typically upset the sterilization of the already much harder to keep clean grains, compared to sawdust.

Which incendentally might set up your culture if using lignin/wood/cellulose for faster leapoff and colonization of a wood based surface, since they will already be prepared or exposed to the need to produce the correlating enzymes. And be a okay grain spawn or temporary colonization media  for gourmets and woodlovers like this.

Yeah that's bacterial, it's called "wet spot"
I had that problem when I started switching to bags, its harder to get the moisture right with bags and takes a few runs to dial it in. Also noticed I had to pressure cook for longer than you normally would with quart jars. 2.5-3 hours.

Thanks for the info I suppose I didn’t provide enough information I’m bad at writing stories. The grains were boiled for 30mins ish, steam dried and finished drying them with a fan till there was nearly 0 moisture on the outside, it didn’t get that much condensation or wet spots until it was almost fully colonized,

The vent time was unknown but their was a vent time probly less than 10 mins I’d gues 5

Pc time 2 hours

Grains looked drier than a popcorn fart

Uniform agar
This hobby is hard lol I’m guessing it was prep that went bad somewhere
I suppose theirs things that need to be tweaked maybe just bump up the time on everything? Shhhet

I left them In the pc to cool down as well maybe let it cool in front of a hood?

This is why I hate oats...bacterial as fuck.

If the bags are sealed properly with a sound filter it won't matter.

The factor I find most troubling with oats is the hull.

Not to say it can't be done, but oats are a little more tricky for first timers to dial in.

I mod on so many other platforms and this is one of the most common issues I see.

I have always found Rye, Wheat, and Millet (WBS) to be much more user friendly and in my area cheaper as well. :strokebeard2:

They were dry on out outside before the pc, after the cool down and agar thrown in and mixed up they looked dry no visible water or anything.  Until later colonization. Also I kept reading that oats are amazing which is why I chose that and cheap. I gues everybody got their own taste lol.
I’m just praying it was vent time.
Trying to check the boxes on everybody’s comments

They are great if you can dial in the hydration. But defs not noob friendly, arent as forgiving

Ok so theoretically speaking the hydration could have been correct but we will never know because of the vent time correct? From my understanding if the vent time was fcked then that could lead to bacteria which makes it wet

Improper hydration can also cause issues with sterilization. You have to narrow things one factor at a time, i would start with vent time. Do 15 minutes

while bacteria probably in some measure can make or increase moisture functionally, in mycology bacteria thrive because of easilly digested food sources and high humidity.

the end goal here is either way to have grains looking serviceable coming out of the PC

check for water coming into your jars
