PF Tek questions
    #28377827 - 06/28/23 01:15 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

I've been reading and am about to embark on PF Tek jars with BRF, Verm, Water.

This is my understanding of the process with my questions in RED.

1. Make the BRF/Verm/Water mixture, get it to the right hydration.

2. Put inoculation holes in jar lids.  Should I Plug holes with Silicone to make self sealing?

3. Put in jars with inoculation holes, covered in foil, and sterilize in pressure cooker (or however).  Let cool completely.

4. Inoculate with spore syringe through holes in lid. Leave some place dark about 75ish degrees and wait for mycelium to colonize.
If "No" to self sealing holes (silicone) do I now cover holes with micropore tape after inoculation or just leave?

5. Once colonized, get cakes out of jars and soak in water overnight.

6. "Case" cakes in Verm (or Coir?) and place in fruiting chamber.

At this point, I'm not trying to "fruit" yet, rather I'm waiting for mycelium to grow through "casing" right? Do I keep this in the dark with no air flow for now?

7. When mycelium coats casing, NOW I want to "Fruit" them.  Expose to some light, crack lid for air flow, and mist for evaporation.

8. Mushrooms should start in a week or two -- harvest when veil starts to separate.

9. Go for another flush.

My main confusions are:
A. Exactly when to introduce light?  Does light hurt mycelium if introduced too soon?

B. If Air flow and gas exchange are two different things, when is gas exchange (micro pore tape over a hole) first necessary?

C. After I harvest the first flush, do I soak and go for the next flush immediately or do I let it "rest" a few days between flushes?

My first time doing this I went straight from colonized grain to fruiting conditions and it did work, but I want to up my game. :-)

Thanks All!

Don't use silicone to cover the holes, you need gas exchange for healthy mycelium.

You could cover the holes with micropore tape if you got fungus gnats but this is optional.

Use a water tub for fruiting the cakes.

Light is necessary at all stages. Ambient light is sufficient, no need for a lamp.

Don't let the cake rest or dry out between flushes.

And most importantly, give the cake an additional week after full colonization before birthing it. This is called consolidation and is a must.

Here's the updated PF tek thread you should read.

You could also completely forego the top dry verm layer if you have filter disks to cover the holes before PCing them as is outlined in the BRF puck tek. This way you get to fit a bit more of the actual colonizable cake into the jar and don't have to worry about taking the dry verm layer off when birthing it, also possibly better visibility of the cake in case anything is wrong (PF Tek cakes are pretty resistant though).
In my case I had to inoculate by taking the lid off inside a SAB though so if that's not available to you go with the standard PF Tek.

You don't want to cover the holes with silicone and have no air exchange - that will suffocate the mycelium and most likely stall it out at some point into colonization.
As for the light - it doesn't really matter when you introduce it. There's no specific requirement for darkness during colonization, even while it's in the jars colonizing the BRF+verm mix you can expose it to ambient light just fine.

Thanks.  I read the threads. Someone (Cheesekiller I think) gave me those links before but I was having trouble wrapping my head around this part:

"...After surface conditions like these have been achieved then cakes are ready to go into fruiting conditions which is simply just creating small openings on top by slightly offsetting the lid to leave small openings a few square centimeters per top corned. Looks like this..."

So if I understand - the only thing that prevents "fruiting conditions" after removing and casing the cakes is that you crack the lid for more air exchange.  That seems like such a TINY little difference between the little holes for gas exchange that the cake always had, and then being in the water box with the lid shut that I was resistant to believing it was "that simple" to switch into fruiting conditions.

I'm on it!!!  Thanks all.
