Grow bag colonized but no pins at 12 days
    #28367280 - 06/20/23 02:01 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Hello,

First time growing and using a grow bag. Mycelium appears to be 100%. I made slits in the top of the bag 12 days ago to put it in fruiting conditions but it doesn't really appear to have any knots yet and definitely no pins. Growing golden teachers. Wanted to get some advice...or thoughts on photo I'm uploading

Patience. Nothing to do now but wait. Maybe give it a mist if there aren't any beads of water on the top.

Welcome by the way.

Appreciate the quick response. I was hoping you might say that. That seems to be a trend with first time growers like myself being impatient but just that little bit of feedback will calm my anxiousness lol. Thank you

Looks dry. If its healthy and intact substrate pre first flush

You could decide to dunk it. Maybe just a short 1h dunk
weighing it down submerged.

Make sure to drain off all excess water

Its also okay to make holes in the grow bag
if its fully colonized, and tight with CO2 from colonization
cant really see if thats the case with your bag

-

right now im having great results just fruiting inside bags with a few extra air holes and increasing air if the fruits look like they need it

I see..I was actually concerned yesterday that maybe it wasn't drying out enough and that's why it wasn't fruiting yet so I added a third cut in the bag last night to increase airflow. But now that there is more airflow I should concentrate on adding more moisture it sounds like?

i dont see any pearls or beads of water on the surface

OR any condensation on your bag,

so yes sir I am assuming that your sub is dried out.

At this point AIR or more air would be okay,

but IF its dried out, it needs a dunk both air and humidity

-

Are there no pins/primordia on this?

No I don't really see any pins or primordia. Here is a little bit better photo of the outside of the bags moisture.

If I dunk it can I put it back in the bag afterwards?

So I have quick follow up. My substrate did in fact start pinning finally! Actually like 4 or 5 days ago.

So now the only issue is that it's only pinning a little on the left and right side of the cake. Nothing going on in the middle. It did turn slightly yellow in the center and wondering if it's because I may have misted it too much but not entirely sure? Anyway, any recommendations or thoughts about why the center isn't pinning at all?

Hello...so good news, I've had plenty of pins and growth since our last chat. I actually had one super large GT that I harvested this morning. I'm new to this so when I try harvesting it I was twisting it but the large stem broke and instantly started getting some bluing which I think is normal but my concern is it seemed like it dropped stuff/liquid (bluish black) all over the surrounding mushrooms. I'm not sure but I thought it gave off a sharp pungent smell initially once that happened and I thought it was weird that it appeared to spray on the surrounding mushrooms. Hear are a couple photos of the harvested mushroom and the surrounding mushrooms with the discoloring. Is this normal?

The  black "drops" inky like are spores
Lay a cap on silver foil with a glass turned upside down around it for a few hours, see if it drops a print for you

The blue stains on the base of the cluster is worrisome, but other fruits look normal/okay

Honestly your pheno/strain doesnt look like GT/Golden Teacher to me, but some penis envy type of lineage, I also dont see much spores?

As for smell?? Some cubensis strains/genetics stink imo,
penis envy included
sometimes its probably bacteria or contams but this is not something I can answer

as for the continuation of your single post 1 flush bag..

Im not a trusted cultivator around here, so
my answer sadly is not neccessarily peer approved,

but id say if you are new, just cut the fruits off at the base with a sharp knife, if prefer to keep the substrate heavy over harvesting the inch/few mms

However, the twist and pull technique when done correctly, should also let you pick the fruit without more than trivially hurting the mycelium, leaving a nice/okay surface of mycelium

If you are gonna continue to harvest bag, its worth learning and practising to perfection

Now that we have avoided contaming your bag by dunking it before a first flush, which can happen even if it typically shouldnt, nor should the perfect grower man ever have less than perfect field capacity (saturation of water inside the colonized matter)

You have two ways to go.

1) Most safe route

No dunk, wait for 2nd flush, repeat until no fruits or clear show of advancing contam (like green molds) then trash

2) way of water

I expect you have no qualification or experience to decide for yourself if the substrate has lost a lot of water

Nor if it is carrying nutrition that makes what you got a sparse fluish, or exactly
along the lines the producer of the bag
Intended for you to get in terms of Weight

If the 2nd flush is really really sparse, like maybe only 3 or 4 fruits,

it could still be the Culture nutrition

AND IF you secured a print for your future cultivation

Then yes,1-2 days past harvesting, if it has too little water remaining while still retaining healthy fruiting capacity, and nutrition

A dunk COULD give you a great 2nd flush, bot in terms of the first flush maybe not beeing what the substrate would have produced with perfect conditions and with perfect water available

--
--

(but its dependant on a lot of factors, the primary being:
"what nutrition was it composed of, what was its weight, and how much water did it hold,"

+and how much fruits did it fruit already.

a third 3) option could be to wait until there's no sign of new fruits, and no signs of contams, and then dunk it.

that way you either get some or you dont, with no additional risk from dunking/exposing a unknown health substrate that has "open wounds" to moisture is a great way to get the contam started

sadly i dont have any other credentials for the 1-2days before dunk after harvest rule, other than having fruited alot of true field capacity substrate grow bags, and seeing that quite a few more of the ones not attempted dunk still put out weight and several flushes (minimum 3)

Which surprised me, given how hardcore we are around here about dunking generally being safe

And is also why im currently tip toeing around the dunk

but for my baghs, those i knew they were field capacity, i knew the amounts of nutrition they used, so i knew their potential
and roughly what water they had lost

so feeling light to me, knowing all the other factors, those who actually needed water, put out some good flushes

hopefully this was a confusing and complex answer leaving you with more questions
