Pseudocasing
    #28376509 - 06/27/23 12:15 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Is it possible to over compact the pseudo casing?

It and my substrate are made for 50/25/25 hpoo/coir/verm.

The main part of the substrate was nice and fluffed I didn’t apply any pressure to it but the pseudo I patted down because I read it could reduce blobbing.

I’m worried I over compacted it, how would I know/ can I fix it?

There’s some colonization happening as seen in the pic.

After a couple days it also looks like it’s “cracking”, is it too dry?

I did the squeeze test and it seemed to be at field capacity

I actually compact down my substrate and pseudocasing quite a bit. I find it preferable to do that, since it prevents side pinning in shoeboxes; and a nice surface for even pinning. It prevents blobbing in PE varieties too.

Only problem is if your spawn is bacterial, it needs more space to breath, compacted bacterial spawn can go a bit anaerobic.

What, you don't like the taste of Clostridium in your fungus?

It shouldn't be an issue. It can take quite a bit longer to colonize but it doesn't stop the mycelium altogether. What might be an issue is your substrate if you're growing cubes.
I'm thinking that you're growing something else though? One last thing, I always give my tubs a good misting after adding the casing, which is usually when I spawn to bulk.
If you haven't, it's fine to do so now.

I am growing cubes, why would the sub be a problem? I’ve seen a lot of people have really great results with a hpoo/coir sub so I’m surprised by this.

Will the misted soggy pseudo not slow colonization?

How would I develop botulism in my grow?

The sub is only 3-4inch thick which is standard.

I can maybe give FAE to minimize this but most TC’s like to give the mycelium time to consolidate before putting into FC, no?

Using manure requires much more in the way of sterilizing/pasteurizing for example and doesn't really provide any significant benefits for cubes.
It helps to bear in mind that the substrate is more a water reservoir, not the primary source of nutrients for the mycelium. Just coir, or coir and verm,
often doesn't even need pasteurizing, let alone sterilization and provides everything that the cubes need, while being less prone to contamination than manure.
And yes, a pseudo casing can slightly slow down colonization but not enough to be that significant. The idea too isn't that it's soggy, but moist, just as the
substrate itself is, since it's just the same substrate used as a top layer - hence pseudo casing. Lastly, there is no need to wait to put into so called fruiting conditions.
That's rather outdated now, since you can put the tub into the same conditions, with air and a little light from the get go, which also generally speeds up colonization and fruiting.

Ok, well I made sure to pasteurize at a core temp of 160 for 1.5 hours so I don’t think that should be too much of an issue.

I’ll try misting this time and see if it provides different results

You shouldn't need to mist until around the time of your first harvest, if everything's more or less dialed in right.
Apart that is from a good misting when spawning to bulk and putting on the casing. Other than that, you can just LITFA for about three weeks.
Though do check on it now and then of course, just to scratch that itch, if nothing else.
