The sense of being watched. What defines being watched?

I often encounter this phenomena when reading about haunted places that people visit. There's always a mentioning of feeling as though you're being watched or followed. What exactly is this feeling and what defines it? What mechanism in the human mind alerts is to this sense of being watched or followed? Can't be sound, can't be sight, can't be touch? Is it perhaps an energy field?

Could be imagination. If a person believes in ghosts and visits a location they believe is inhabited by ghosts it's reasonable that they might feel the presence of a ghost or feel like they're being watched.
Some have theorized that it's a by-product of hyper-vigilance developed through a long history of being stalked by predators. All that's left is to plant the idea and one's feelings and sensations may take precedence over logic and observation.

Sounds like a conglomeration of the spotlight effect, perceiving synchronicity and projecting pareidolia.
Quote:
The spotlight effect is the psychological phenomenon by which people tend to believe they are being noticed more than they really are. Being that one is constantly in the center of one's own world, an accurate evaluation of how much one is noticed by others is uncommon.Â
Quote:
Synchronicity is a phenomenon in which people interpret two separate—and seemingly unrelated—experiences as being meaningfully intertwined, even though there is no evidence that one led to the other or that the two events are linked in any other causal way.
Quote:
Pareidolia is the tendency for perception to impose a meaningful interpretation on a nebulous stimulus, usually visual, so that one sees an object, pattern, or meaning where there is none.
