Rye Grain Spawn

Greetings, fellow growers! For the past year or so I've been making my own rye spawn, sing grow bags, rye berries, gypsum (2% of rye weight) and tap water. I do 3-4 washings, soak in hot tap water overnight, boil for 15 minutes the next day, strain for 30 minutes, then spread out to dry on a screen for about 30 minutes, then add to 3T grow bags. I sterilize in an All American sterilizer for 90 minutes, and let cool.I inoculate with purchased cultures, mostly Lion's Mane, Blue oysters, or Reishi, and wait a couple of weeks. Up until recently I've had great success, but lately nothing grows, except for some Lion's Mane. Grain-to-grain transfers work, but not that well. Any suggestions? Could my tap water contain fungicides? My substrates grow well, but not my spawn. Thanks!

It sounds like everything youre doing is correct to me. Got any pics to show us whats going on? If you suspect your water, get some distilled water and test if it works, but i doubt its that.

If your tap water contains fungicides, you have MUCH bigger problems to deal with than worrying about some mushrooms not growing.
Have you tried cutting a grain open before bagging to see how the insides look? Grain with low moisture content can slow growth dramatically.
You may want to try a longer PC time as well. I normally PC 3T wheat bags in an AA for 3+ hours at 17+ psi.

The first pic is of my Lions Mane spawn added to the rye berries. Just a slimy mess. The second pic is of the rye berries about a month after adding a blue oyster culture. No growth.

Maybe the grain could be too wet? There is a test where you put a Tbsp or so of grains on a paper towel after you think they´re at a good moisture content, after straining and such. If it gets the paper towel wet, then the grains have too much moisture on their outsides.
I made a strainer with a wood frame and metal screen, so as to provide as much surface area as possible for steam to evaporate, and it to still drip into the sink. Instead of straining for so long, I pour the boiled hot grains directly into the strainer (with cold water running to be nice to the plumbing). This way, enough of the surface water can evaporate off the grains before they cool down enough to where little to no evaporation is happening anymore

Grains should be sterilized for 2.5-3 hrs when your doing bags. Is the filter patch blocked? Are you inoculating while the grains are still hot?
If it used to work and nothing has changed in your prep it could be the cultures aren't healthy.

That first bag looks way to wet. I let my grain dry for at least 2-3 hours after the boil. Also as previously mentioned 90 minutes PC time is for jars bags require 2.5-3 hours for sterilization.
