Possible contamination in grow bag
    #28373666 - 06/25/23 05:01 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

I bought a beginner grow bag and Jedi Mind Fuck spores.

I inoculated the spawn bag and it colonised fully after one break and shake. Altogether it took about a month.

I mixed the colonised spawn into the grow bag on 7/6/23 and it colonised the bag with thick mycelium in about 2 weeks. There was one corner of the bag that was uncolonised, so I broke and shook it (without any of it touching the filter patch) on 19/6/23 and since then the mycelium has been growing very slowly, if at all from some of the grains.

I checked it today, and there is no sign of contamination, but there are pins starting. There is one shroom growing on the side below the elastic band, and two growing at the top next to the bag.

Should I put into fruiting conditions or just leave it to see if the mycelium colonises the bag like it did before?

I was very sterile throughout all processes.

Thanks,

Remove the vendor names. Its against the rules.

These shitty vendors market to beginners wanting to grow "hey, you can shoot some spores in our bags and grow shroomzzz"

Anyone here will tell you putting a DIRTY spore syringe to a HIGHLY NUTRITIONAL grain is advised against. By putting that syringe to grain you are providing the contamination within that syringe everything it needs to thrive.

And no, you were not sterile. You may have been careful, and used some sanitation, but you were not performing sterile procedures nor were you in a sterile environment. But that is not the issue here.

Only use spore syringes in conjunction with PF Tek. Or learn agar and clean up your spores first, then you can use grains.

Anyway, it sounds like it didn't fully recover due to the contam, but you still have some pins. You'll get some fruits.

If you learned agar you could quite easily clone a mushroom fruit.

Thanks for the reply.

I've removed the vendor names, so apologies for that.

Thanks for your insight. I was as sterile as I could be, and thought that as the bag had 90% colonised, it would be fine after a break and shake.

Now there are pins (plus a cluster of them on the surface), would you recommend cutting the bag and putting it out in indirect sunlight, or waiting to see if the mycelium colonises further?

Glad to hear I'll get some fruits, so hopefully it wasn't a complete waste.

I am only looking to trip two to three times a year, so I was going to do this one grow and have a supply that would last me.

If this goes bad or I need more, I'll look into different teks to produce better results.

Thanks,

Anyone have any thoughts on putting into fruiting?

That's really my only quandary now 👍

When I did one of these bags, I had a similar trajectory to you ... slow colonization after a shake.

I decided to leave the bag sealed and let the fruit grow as much as possible before unsealing it. I did that because I was worried about (more) contamination and hoped that since I saw pins, I'd get fruit too. It worked out. When there was enough to harvest I opened the bag and eventually got 3 meh flushes. It could have been worse.

Thank you!

I guess as long as they look like they're growing well, they're getting what they need.

I'll keep a close eye on them and hope for the best.

My main reason for growing is I don't have the time to go picking libs each year, especially for the small hauls I've got over the last 5!

You can always give 'em better conditions but the more poorly colonized everything is, the better the chance to pick up new cooties once you open up the bag. It's a tough call.

The filter patch on the bag might provide sufficient FAE. I'm not 100% when it comes to these bags. You could poke some more holes with a needle or scalpel.

Sorry if my previous reply sounded harsh.

Everything you need is found right on this site if you search properly.

To follow up from the above posts, I weighed out my first harvest today which I've been picking and drying over the last week, and got 47g dry.

I have about another 10g (rough estimate) left to harvest from the first flush (including aborts), so it's been pretty successful.

I cut a slit in the bag and misted every day or two after my initial post, and the growth exploded!

Thanks for your help, all 😊
