saddam hussein vs. us security
    #2837311 - 06/28/04 06:36 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

i would think that there would be 2 very simple, but important questions that americans would be asking themselves.

saddam hussein was a tyrant. his government was totalitarian. the united states, or any other nation, would not have been wrong to completely reject the ba'ath party as a legitimate and sovereign government. i feel that if hussein's government posed a threat to the united states, and removing him eliminated that threat without replacing it with larger ones, then it was the right thing to do. those are pretty big "ifs" though.

the two questions are:

1. did ba'ath iraq pose a threat to the united states?

2. did removing saddam hussein and bringing down the ba'ath regime increase or decrease our security?

these are difficult questions and there are probably few people who are truly in a position to formulate accurate answers, but i think that they are very important questions which it seems nobody really cares to think about. we hear about the current situation. the occasional bombing. the interim government. "transfer of sovereignty". fighting with insurgents. al-sadr. chelabi. WMD's?

i think that we're far enough along at this point that people really should be asking, especially with an election coming up, "was that war our president led us into... a mistake? was it worth the cost? did it make us safer?".

what do you all think?

I think this job should have been completed the first time but because we listened to the wafflers in the UN we had to wait and keep troops in Saudi Arabia to protect them, thus, by his own words, giving bin laden his raison d'etre for declaring war on the US.
Would 9/11 have happened if we had finished the job then? Or should we have allowed Hussein to take Kuwait and then Saudi Arabia? The politics of children are almost always amusing and of no consequence.
Question 1 Yes
Question 2 We are more secure

1; if they did its because the US wanted them to.

2;were never secure with nukes being shipped around constantly.

did ba'ath iraq pose a threat to the united states?

Depends how paranoid you are doesn't it. I'm sure most right-wingers see "threats" everywhere they look. The reason Iraq was invaded wasn't because it was a "threat".

did removing saddam hussein and bringing down the ba'ath regime increase or decrease our security?

Did changing Iraq into the most lawless country on earth make the security situation better or worse? My guess is worse.

but i think that they are very important questions which it seems nobody really cares to think about.

The reason we heard so much about WMD's was because that was the only remotely reasonable excuse for invading a country that even had the faintest chance of getting past the UN. Once it was clear to everyone the WMD story was bullshit what's the point in going for excuses that are even more pathetic than WMD was?

was it worth the cost?

For the american taxpayer it wasn't, for Haliburton and the rest of the corporations robbing Iraq blind it definately was. They'll have made fortunes out of this.
