hydrogen peroxide and shrooms

Hey guys
I'm currently starting my first shoebox grow, and one thing that slightly worries me is fungus gnats. I have a lot of houseplants and quite a few fungus gnats flying around. I haven't quite thought of a solution to this yet (I might end up just using micropore tape), but I was just browsing the advanced mycology forum and came across something about how hydrogen peroxide is good for mushroom growth. Hydrogen peroxide happens to be exactly what I use to kill the fungus gnat larvae in my houseplant soil.
My question is this: would using hydrogen peroxide to kill the larvae hurt the mycelium as well, at what concentration does it start to be harmful? also would adding hydrogen peroxide in the very beginning be beneficial?

Do not use hydrogen peroxide.

Any info/reason as to why?

Peroxide will not only kill the fungus gnats but also your fungus. This is because as peroxide reacts with your mycelia, it breaks down it's components, and kills it.

I've read/heard of people using it as a natural oxidizer of the substrate, what's the difference that makes it beneficial for that but harmful for this specific instance
not trying to be contrary/argumentative, just interested in learning more

Most likely peroxide is used in the prep to oxidize the substrate, it would break down and be gone before it would be used for the mushroom itself. Spraying the mycelia with peroxide kills your mycelia as stated before.

would adding peroxide in prep even be beneficial then? or would the benefits be so minimal that its practically worthless.

The only thing that peroxide may be useful for is cobweb mold maybe. Other than that, it has little to no place in cultivating cubes. It would do nothing of any real benefit for the substrate that many use, which is coir, or coir and verm.

Right so it seems that oxidization is unnecessary? or at least not necessary when you have good FAE.
and by that logic the only real use of peroxide would sanitizing (like you said).
is it possible to use higher concentrations to sanitize tubs then? perhaps wiping down the tub and then adding your bulk substrate without letting the peroxide dry fully. would this have any benefit whatsoever over your classic iso?

Hot soap and water is your best bet. I don't ever use peroxide for my cultivation.
obviously don't go putting hot soapy water in with your spawn if that's how you read that. I'm saying that you can just use hot soapy water to clean your tubs. There is no need for any additional sanitation. I don't even ISO my tubs anymore and they turn out great.

interesting. I am doing a shoebox rn, and my plan is close off all the holes during the initial colonization to prevent contams but it seems like I won't need to?

You certainly do not need to, as soon as you spawn that mycelia it's been exposed to the open air. At spawning you want to make sure your coir is prepared by pasteurizing your coir or putting 1 gal boiling water into a 5 gal bucket with a brick of coir. Once you spawn the original culture must be clean and your substrate ready either bucket tek'd or pasteurized. I would avoid using any additives in your coir such as verm or gypsum as they're not needed at all. Just regular Coir will do.

Got the same issue and it’s a nightmare, don’t use peroxide, bti is available if they’re getting into your substrate, put some in a spay bottle and give the sub a light spray if it’s affected but prevention is best so micropore the holes (I’ve had to make some holes slightly larger to redial my tubs) and then seal the lid with masking tape until it’s time to harvest, once I harvest, then I spray the sub with bti solution as there’s a few stragglers depending on variety and I don’t want to keep taping/untaping lids while I wait for them to mature, also treat all houseplants with bti. Also get those yellow sticky mats but don’t make the mistake I did and rest them on the sub inside the tub, trich spread out from each one, just keep them close to the tubs in your fruiting area. Also check window and door seals as mine just keep coming in, can literally watch swarms of them batting against the windows. Hope that helps.

BTI being? luckily I live on the edge of a desert so I have very few fungus gnats coming in from outside, but the ones that have made it inside are having a field day.

If you're having issues with gnats that will do proper.
