A.k.a said: How often do you see contam when you streak spores from a print? For me it’s been virtually never and that’s with not even taking much precaution. Putting those same spores in a syringe isn’t going to make them dirty.
There’s no opinion or semantics, just people who have it in their head that spores are filthy because they bought shit syringes or saw other people who bought shit syringes saying it. I’d bet you could grab 100 from sporeworks and find zero contaminants in them.
Yeah the pf cakes are good cuz the chunks will slow down bacteria. Ideally you wouldn’t want to use bacterial anything, but with the cakes there shouldn’t be any uncolonized nutrients left for the bacteria to get a hold of as opposed to shaking a half done jar of grain.
Interesting. Yeah i guess i can safely say that, contam is rare when putting prints to agar for me. So are you saying that the shit syringes is less a problem about spores being inherently dirty, and more a problem with the method of preparation?
PS. Thanks for the info btw!

I'll admit it...I used to run spore to grain for years...and never lost a tub. Spores syringe > WBS > Faht's Poo/Straw tek, and those things would pump out mush for like 6 or 7 flushes and never contam.
I would run 6-8 full-size mono's like that at a time, for 2 years straight, and never lost a tub. I lost a few jars but never a tub.
So yeah, it can be done.
I moved on from that for obvious reasons, but it worked. I used a reputable spore vendor.

Yeah exactly. There’s an epidemic of people who grow two tubs and think they’re gurus and start selling syringes with no idea what they’re doing, which then leads to people saying syringes are “inherently dirty” “bacterial at best” and whatever else I’ve seen posted around here recently.
To be clear I’m not saying syringes are the best method, just that they’re totally fine if you have a good source. The main reason I love shroomery is the focus on solid information and this is like the one thing that keeps being perpetuated for some reason. Especially in the last six months.

I agree with A.k.a. and have had that opinion for a while. I've been using S.W. Since 06, and I put syringes straight to grain and germinated at least hundreds of plates with, I don't know how many syringes, and have had almost zero issues. Anytime I have had an issue, it's been a faulty/damaged product (which is always replaced), or I used a syringe that has been sitting around for 2+ years that was likely contaminated from poor storage (my own fault).
I never really used prints because syringes worked so well for me on grain and agar. Now I mostly use swabs because I like the unique varieties.
Like A.k.a. said, this is highly dependent on your spore source, and mine was and still is highly reliable.
