Mycelium cotton instead of mushrooms

Greetings Shroomery community. I am very new to growing, and though I have failed more tubs than harvested individual mushrooms I am really enjoying learning about these amazing fungi.
I have a tub that's been going for about 3 weeks, no mushrooms only mushroom flesh like mycelium growing thick on the surface of the cake.
This has happened before and I removed what I could from another tub, once I removed it I observed it bruising blue. I ate about a gram and felt the effects one can expect from 1g of regular mushrooms. I am stumped, I'm guessing it's either something bacterial or a mutation.
Here are two photos, any input would be greatly appreciated. Much love

Hey Shroom Shame
Welcome to shroomery! You will probably get more traction if you post this in the cultivation category.
That is an interesting find. Do you know which species or variety you have there? Subtropicalis/semperviva is known to have active mycelium. And I believe that Natalensis overlay is also supposed to be active as well, and that does look like nat overlay.
I have never heard of any cubensis that does, though. Cool find in any case.

Hey ReverendMyc
Thank you for the tip, I am still getting used to this website.
Yes I do, this is Burma Psilocybe Cubensis. I have never heard of Natalensis overlay, but it fits the description of what I am seeing.
I find these globs very peculiar, since I was able to grow the Burma out in the past with no issues, had a very bountiful harvest too.
Although these globs are psychoactive they grow much much slower than normal mushrooms do. Would you recommend I keep growing them out for as long as possible, remove them and flush, or should discard the whole tub?
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback, I'm already learning new things

This a a great thread on Nats.
I haven't grown Burma, but cubes should all be pretty similar. Did this grow start from a clone of a previous grow or spores or what source? It is always possible that there was a mix up somewhere along the way unless they are from a clone you did yourself and that is the only variety that you have going. But if you can be certain that you have a cube that is producing active myc/overlay/cottony stuff, it would be worth cloning and seeing if it is a reproducible trait in later grows. That is how some mutants like Enigma got started.
Keep in mind that this is highly unlikely, but not impossible.
No reason to discard the tub though. If you do remove that layer, I would put some to agar to clone and then see what you get.

My grow started from a piece of fresh mushroom flesh I placed on agar, the mushroom was indeed Burma
I live in South Africa, where Natalensis originate from. Perhaps some spores from the wild got in? (I know this sounds silly)
But then again, I have grown King Oyster mushrooms last month that did the exact same thing. Here is a photo of that:

I am going to continue growing them out and see what happens, I will also put it on agar for future testing.

I think the reverend nailed it. It looks like overlay. Probably genetic but bacteria can cause things like this as well. I don't see and metabolite so I'm leaning toward genetics. Maybe an increase in fae would help? I had blue meanie that grew all crazy before. I called it blue cheese because of how it looked. I thought it was bacterial but turns out it was the same on the agar plates no matter how clean they were. I just selected a mutation. You can see how blue it got from where I dropped the shoebox lid on it in the top right. Maybe you gust selected a crazy genetic?

Well if it is genetics then I am somehow inducing the mutation to happen, this has happened to multiple other mushrooms I have grown. Perhaps it's the cold, sometimes the cakes sit in 10° Celsius throughout the night.
No metabolites, no weird smell, over active mycelium.
Update: After harvesting the thick layer of white mushroom flesh I flipped the cake and it started pinning aggressively within 4 days.
Seeing this I believe I might be introducing fruiting conditions too early, where the mycelium is still colonizing causing it to push out mushroom flesh instead of mushrooms to continue it's lifecycle.

Looks like a lack of fresh air exchange reaction. You can spawn your grain and put directly into fruiting without issue with Cubes. Good news it is pinning! I really like Burma cubes.
