Golden Teacher formed hard mycelium, peeing, not fruiting
    #28370018 - 06/22/23 11:26 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

This batch colonized the grain and then bulk substrate fairly quickly (coco, vermilicite, Dr. Myc Magical Gypsum). I didn't use a "casing layer" when I mixed grain and substrate - so there were colonized grains on top, if that matters. The substrate colonized in around a week. I then attempted to fruit.
After a week and a half of "FC" (dub tub tek, fanning and misting several times per day, 70 degrees), the GT mycelium has seeming formed a very tough top layer that is hard to even push a finger into/through. There seems to be a good amount of "Myc piss" on it (yellowish brown) as well as clear water droplets/bubbles.
Just after I took the pics I decided it might be due to lack of casing on top, or at least the lack of casing may have been encouraging me to limit FAE too much, as I didn't want the sub/myc to dry out while I'm at work.
I don't know if the tough layer of myc is Sclerotia or some other behavior or even contamination-related.
Was adding some more damp substrate on top the right move? Might not matter. However I also added some air holes to the top and bottom tubs of each "dub tub". My theory is that there was a lack of FAE at the heart of the "issue".

I've lost one tub to dark green contam, and another has some starting to invade. I don't want to keep waiting with the wrong conditions and have the other 4 tubs go bad.
How do I get this thick myc to fruit?! At least several of the remaining tubs seem thick with myc ffs !

Substrate is uneven and thin. Fanning can cause matting of the mycelium. This looks pretty contaminated: third pic bottom right looks like mold forming (bright white mycelium??)

yeah unforunately I would start again, there is trich in that tub.

Your spawn was likely already contaminated before spawning, how did you inoculate. Golden Teachers, or cubes in general don't form sclerotia as far as I know.

Here are a few things I would fix on your next run.

First Make sure your spawn is clean (there is a link in my sig for that called Clean spawn checklist)

Bulk sub only really needs Coco, and verm (although this isn't needed), Gypsum is outdated and really doesnt do much.

Put a top layer in the future, it helps maintain surface conditions and makes it so that your exposed grains have less of a risk of contamination.

We don't differentiate from colonization and fruiting conditions, FAE is good at all stages

Don't fan as mentioned above, it causes issues with bruising, drying and matting; at best it does nothing. Also don't mist on a schedule

Make sure to even out your substrate in the future, and aim for a substrate depth of around 3-4 inches.

Shoe Boxes have enough FAE by their loose fittings lids, I don't believe your issue is a lack of FAE; you want to watch for surface conditions (look at my siggy for that link). and adjust accordingly. If your water droplets are evaporating and you need to mist too often to replenish it, you need to dial down the FAE. if your water is pooling, you need more FAE.

Thanks for the tips. I plan to up the bulk per tub next round for sure. If fanning can cause the matting, what would be better in its place? Filtered holes for more passive FAE than active fanning?
I presume the coco/verm layer I added after pics were taken would also help shield the myc from air gusts as well.

Indeed - I am fairly certain that was the tub I ended up having to dispose of - or it may be the one partial contam that I have separated from the rest and am hoping to salvage. I've sprayed hydrogen peroxide on the sus spots - not that this has ever saved it for me in the end

Also don't use peroxide, have a read of the "cultivation rule book" in my siggy , Peroxide only hurts the mycelium and only kills surface mold, once you see mold on the surface, you know that its throughout the substrate already, weakening the mycelium with peroxide will make it easier for contamination to take hold.

IMO, if your tub has not started fruiting or pinning and you run into trich, the tub is done for. you can't fight trich. Only option from there is to bury it outside and hope mother nature can take over and produce some fruits for you

After reading the linked "Clean Spawn Checklist", I feel better prepared, thank you! It eye opening to see how good a contaminated spawn can look.
I did use a SAB, alcohol, some flame, gloves when inoculating, but I'm sure it was somewhat sloppy. I didn't clean my forearms for example.
I also am pretty sure I mixed the grain bags too often as well - according to the Clean Spawn Checklist this can spread bacteria and temporarily weaken the myc.
Related question: I am using reptile warming pads in boxes with my grain bags (variety of sources online, I haven't made my own grain yet), and I've noticed that the sides/ends towards the heat will seemingly get quite wet within the first days after inoculation. And the rest of the grain can look quite dry. Is this a sign of bacterial contam from the start? Or is that initial wet just a temperature gradient/physics thing?

I look forward to reading the surface conditions link, thanks again! :sun:

You want to heat the ambient room temperature. Heat pads produce too uneven heating, which can cause alot of issues for the mycelium and growing conditions.

Oooo more to read :ooo:
Sad to hear about the outlook for the tub(s), but I have other stuff in process too, thankfully.
I should find a place to try the nature method for the discards - new house with .7 acres, a lot of which is wooded with English Ivy as the ground cover throughout much of the woods. Sort of seems like a great place for mushrooms tbh, but just a hunch. The ivy seems like it would be a nice natural casing above the dirt & leaves to hold in moisture :crazy2:
