Stalled cakes.

The two cakes on the top row produced a few small mushrooms each. The others have a few pins on them but something feels off. Also this is my first grow so who knows. My gut tells me they’re too dry and need to be dunked. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Welcome to Shroomery my friend!
I see quite a big of bruising from your cakes drying out, likely because you're using a sgfc with no holes drilled. Perlite requires a lot of air flow to trigger evaporation. I would suggest using a water tub, especially with your amount of cakes
If you do decide to continue using this sgfc, expect to baby sit it quite a bit, and i would drill some holes to allow air flow into the fruiting chamber. i would also cut down the foil to the size of the cakes.
That seems like a lot of work compared to filling a tub with water and flipping a lid/offsetting the lid.

Your gut is right - dunk your cakes in clean water for a day and put them back in your fruiting chamber after they get saturated. If they don't look better in a couple more days mist them and keep humidity high. Should see more white mycelium on the tops and sides after that.

If it’s a tub without holes then it’s not a SGFC. It’s an unmodified tub. I’ve used perlite in unmodified tubs for years. Airflow was never an issue. Perlite is just messier.

How long have they been in the tub? Did they get a 24 hour dunk before they went in? Do they feel light? Cut the foil back or use mason jars lids.

Ive always read that perlite needs air flow to evaporate. Thats why its not advisable to put SGFC against walls. How are you getting the perlite to evaporate the moisture?

They’ve been “fruiting” for almost 3 weeks.
I did dunk them for 18 hours before going in.
They DO feel light. I replaced the foil with lids.

I’ve never used a SGFC but I’ve read similar information. I do BRF, millet cakes and shoeboxes. Previously used damp perlite as a base for the cakes or shoeboxes. I adjust the lid to control evaporation, works fine. No fanning. I use water tubs now because it’s cleaner. I used perlite in my plant pots a lot so I always had it around. I prefer coir now.

I’d dunk them. How long were they in jars? Why did you birth them? I don’t take cakes out of jars until I see pins.
