My bulk is colonizing way to slow, can i do something?
    #28364681 - 06/18/23 07:38 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

This is day 1

Day 5

Can you see a problem with it ? I think the ratio was 1:2 to 1:3
I'm thinking maybe I didn't mixed well enough the substrate with the spawn and that is why is not spreading, can I use gloves and mix it now or is too late ?

looks like its going. Dunno what your ratio is of, and what you're using. I'm guessing rye on pasteurized manure? You can mix it again. I probably wouldn't. That will break it and shock it, but if it doesn't contaminate it will recover. That is a very high ratio of spawn. The idea is that grain much more easily contaminates, and you actually want the millet or rye to be consumed rather quickly. Its purpose is not really as a fruiting medium, though it can be. Its only been 5 days and the mycelium is recovering and growing. If it is manure and there is any amonia left, that will slow it down. Clean air exchange will help it grow faster.

My ratio is max 1:3 , is popcorn with coco coir, it has a layer of coco coir on top.
The temps are 75-78f

There's not really any reason to mix up a tub after it's spawned.

It's a bit hard to see from that angle, but that does seem slow. Might not have been the healthiest when it was mixed in. How did you prepare your spawn?

it's mckennaii, it was white with no signs of contam and smelled like mushrooms.
I microwaved the coco coir for 15' and let it cool for 4hs, could that have been an issue ?

I'm asking about the popcorn. How did you prep, sterilize, and inoculate it? Not all contams cause color changes or strange smells, and mistakes at any of those steps could introduce them to your grain.

I'd expect a little more visible growth as well but at this point all you can do is just wait it out :mushroom2:

You got a jar of colonized popcorn from someone else? If you don't know how they prepared it, that leaves a lot of unknown variables that could impact the grow. Using spore syringes on grain, not having a proper pressure cooker to sterilize (or using it incorrectly) and poor inoculating technique are all possible points of failure.

As for your current tub, Dave is right. All you can do is wait it out at this point.

Where did you purchase it from? Were they a reputable supplier?

The best thing you can do here, is remain patient, as it colonises.

It wasn't a random person, they had quite an amount and of different kinds, but they are local plp not widely know, i don't think it was a problem with the spawn maybe I used way to much substrate

I think is picking up, i hope it can give at least one boi

I opened up and it smelled SWEET but not really a nice pleasant sweet

Pic

When I did the bulk the spawn smelled like mushrooms, the smell was okay, this doesn't smell like that, it's very different, so I guess the slow colonization is due to bacteria ?

The sweet smell would definitely be indicative of combination.

I guess I'll buy another colonized jar and try again

What could I have done wrong and change next time ? This is what I did:

-  Coco coir was brought already hidratated, it was in a black bag with a hole, i brought it from a reputable place which sells all kinds of stuff for bonsai

- Microwaved the coco for 15' and let it rest for 4 hours

- Mix 1:2 to 1:3 (didn't measured exactly) with the spawn

- The spawn was brought colonized but to people who work with this stuff. Also the jar smelled like mushrooms and had no signs of contam

- All the stuff I used was washed and sprayed well with alcohol 70%

- I did it in the bathroom after showering and desinfecting

- The shoebox had no holes, just a closed box quite tight.

- Temps around 75-85f

Things i plan to change for next time:

- Pasteurize the coco for 24hs (the most common method)

- Have the shoebox with holes with microphore from day 1

- Use a 1:1 proportion

Still buy the colonized jar because I don't have a PC and takes a 2-4 weeks to make them from 0

Buy a dry brick of coco.
Stop buying colonized jars unless you plan on putting it to agar to clean them up.

Post a photo of the jars and we’ll tell you if they’re good or not.

IMO you got some level of contamination in there. Regardless don’t buy pre moistened coir. Buy dry bricks. That is another avenue of contamination.

Yeah on some level IMO some of those grains have small uncolonized spots, which albeit are also pressed against the glass but some have a weird look on top of them not being colonized. There is a slightly wet or slimy look to some of it I think.

Someone else may be able to confirm that.

On another note again don’t microwave coir. If you’re gonna cook it you want to pasteurize it to kill off as much bad as you can but leave beneficial.

Looks like some bacterial corn (?) jar

not SUPER ULTRA MEGA SHABBY

more like....meeeh.

that said I've seen many such jars make it

Inspect your surface in detail and look for other growths apart from mycelium, but dont hang over the surface, and only handle your substrates when you are shower-clean, gloves, mask, hair cover and beard-cover and full hazmat suit with your throat tightly pulled shut.

Shave your beard and your hair completely bald.

then take on another set of gloves, and wet them in 70% isopropanol

Gloves and mask will be okay this one time only
