PC Not reaching 15 psi

After a few failed grain preparations, began to suspect the PC. Now discovered that it only goes to 14 psi. Should the time be extended to achieve sterility for grains to compensate ?

Yeah if it isnt coming up to 15 psi youll need to pc longer. Does your PC use a rocker or a guage?

Man tape three or four quarters to the jiggler stays around 16psi only rocking 1 or 2 times a minute super easy.

No gauge, has a weight which doesn't really rock, a slide fit over a tube which is similar to rockers. Manufacturer states in the manual that it can be used to sterilise things such as baby bottles :-) Never heard it blow off.

I have added three magnets to the weight, but this thing doesn’t not have a “rocking” weight, it fits neatly over the vent tube. Maybe having done that it may reach 15 psi, but having problems with oat jars getting contams even though not inoculated. So over it, looking at a Presto, 16 Q. Thanks for the reply !

With cereal grains the most important part is making sure they are hydrated before the PC cycle take a few grains and cut them in half they should be translucent and not starchy let dry for an hour or more then load up in your jars. Now how about of a pic of your PC valve.

Which model of PC are you currently using?
How are you prepping the oats and what is your PC process for them? As stated above under hydrated grain makes effective sterilization much harder to achieve.

Shouldn't make a difference. I've validated pressure cookers that don't reach 14psi. Run for 2 hours, will be gtg so long as you've vented your pc. Be sure to wash/rinse grain clean prior to prep. If your problems persist, clean up your culture; if you're using LC, stop and go bact to a2g until you've figured it out.

My Presto manual says something about getting service if the PC won't reach 14 PSI, not 15. And it only hits about 14.5 PSI in cruise mode, I need the heat on HIGH to actually touch 15 on the dial.
My T-fal never passes 14 PSI.
I think the sterilization tables for canning have a little wiggle room in them. Also, the gauge is not perfect. The only way to REALLY know the pressure is to measure the temperature while in use, which is a bit of a hassle.

I use an min/max temp registering autoclave thermometer and biological indicator vials with chem strips.
2 hours works.

We are on the same side, I was also trying to reassure OP.

Lel, I was agreeing with you also. Such is the nature of text sometimes. Difficult to interpret intention with short text

Hey Stipe-n Cap!
Can you expand on this process a little bit? Just interested in the tech you are using. I understand the min/max thermometer, pretty sure I got the bio indicator vial, but what is a chem strip?
Thanks for your guidance, Phlanx

There's not a great difference between 14 and 15 PSI (~ ∆-7%) and you shouldn't experience any observable difference in results, as stated by Stipe-n Cap. If you're seriously concerned about contamination coming from the pressure cooker, perhaps you could run it for slightly longer- actually, if the contamination is due to the pressure cookers poor performance, and there's such a little difference between 14 and 15 PSI, you may need to run it for much longer. There's likely another source of contamination somewhere.

Thank you for the reply. I am boiling racehorse oats, for 40 minutes at least, checking during that time for some burst grains, squeezing some. Overnight on a screen to dry until little moisture remains. Into 1 qrt jars lids are filtered, wrap lids with alfoil. Vent PC for 20 minutes after steam appears, PC for 2 hours. Not immediately colonise, tightening lids, leave foil on until needed.
