A different kind of SAB

Hey all!
I've just successfully finished a first WBS mono-tub grow and I may have something to add to the TEKs.
Some TEKs I've read use some sort of Mono-Tub, hood, or similar technique to prevent contamination while inoculating the jars.
In a previous life, I did extensive water quality work that required PPM/PPB field sampling methods for Pesticides, Metals, Biologicals, etc.
One of the steps involved preparing sample bottles for further processing. As our mobile lab did not have hoods, etc., we used the following method:
(Please excuse the lack of photos, my wife won't let me post any...)
You will need several feet of 1/2" PVC pipe, 8 90 degree elbows and 4 'T's. You will also need some med-large CLEAR garbage bags. Clear is important if you want to see what you are doing.
First, build a roughly 18-24" cube from the 1/2" PVC pipe. Does not need to be glued-up (in fact, the vapor could contaminate our samples). In this instance, I glued up the 2 square sides with the elbows and Ts, and keep the 4 stretchers loose so I can tear it down for storage.
Then, with gloved hands, place the bag inside the cube, open end towards the user. Gripping points on the outside of the bag, clip it into the cube frame. We used large plastic clips to prevent metals contamination, but they should work OK in this instance. This will create a little room/hood/still air region. The front of the bag will still be curtained/closed just from gravity. (assuming you used a large enough bag!)
Now, through the curtained opening, place all your jars, etc. into the Still Air Bag. Open the jars only after placing them inside and ready to inoculate. I flame my inoculation needle outside the bag just to avoid possible bag melting, then reaching back in with gloved hands, I inoculate each jar and place lids.
Dispose of waste bag, gloves and inoculation syringe. PVC cube can be pulled apart and stored for later re-use.
Easy!
If you abhor single-use of plastics like I do, keep the bag for household disposal or dump your used grow medium later.

What exactly is the advantage of this over an SAB? The simplicity of a tote with holes cut into it can't be beat Imo...

While it may seem complicated compared to a "tote with holes cut in it", it is sterile and contaminate free every single time with no cleaning.
The PVC cube breaks down compact and I have very limited space, so I'm not tripping over an otherwise unused tote with holes in it.

Well I did a bit of digging and these are available commercially. They're just an SAB which is a collapsible tent instead of an actual tote or box. This would be nice for ease of storage or transport - but I don't think anyone's transporting their SAB. I would use it for the storage aspect though, space saved is space used for shoeboxes.

I would not say Sterile, I would say it is sanitized sure, we do have to think about contaminates in the open air. Nor would I say contaminate free. You seem to lack understanding of open air contaminates.

I could see a benefit of it being collapsible, and saving space.
Would agree with Mushhead here. There is no way you can have a sterile environment in that box. Sterility cant be achieved without either heat (flame sterilization), radiation (gamma ray sterilization) or filtration (HEPA filters in Laminar flow hoods/FFU). if it works for you and your situation, im happy for you !

Do you ever get to wear the pants?
Seriously though, not a bad idea. I like how it breaks down when not being used

Thanks StallionMang. We wear pants equally. And she is right considering the potential liabilities. Like why we don't post brand names, etc. And why I use a 'burner' laptop.
Mushead, Perhaps you are not understanding. It works for Parts Per BILLION water quality sampling. It was my job for over 5 years to understand open-air contamination.

I dont know what is considered sterile in your previous place of work. But for purposes of mushroom cultivation, i dont believe the environment you created would he called sterile. Its just a point of terminology thats all.

Interesting effort but the point of a still air box is just that - still air, not sterile air. I also don't see how this is in fact sterile. Also, regarding posting pics, all exif data is stripped from any images that you upload and there's nothing illegal about a still air box, or what you propose here.

if you are doing all this just to use this site, you are in way too deep, the deep state already knows everything about you. that burner laptop and no pics aint helping anything. what saves you is you arent trying to tony montana of shrooms.

My question is: do you use a burner laptop once then snap it like on breaking bad?
