Cool Mist Question
    #2836274 - 06/28/04 02:06 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I'm setting up my cool mist for the first time. Do I need to filter the incoming air in any way? I know that there's a filter already in it, but it doesnt look great. Should I slap a piece of Tyvek across the filter that's in it. Thanks guys.

I've found cool mists to not produce enough humidity. So i just used a wet perlite layer and use a timer w/ the cool mist for air circulation as needed.

I like the way you have that output setup, neat use of funnel!

Once your mushroom spawn is colonized the chances of it being infected with mold or bacteria become a lot smaller, but there is still a small chance. One thing you could do to decrease the potential for infection is run a small "room" HEPA in the same area or room where you have your mushroom grow located. The larger the open space, obviously, the larger the HEPA unit will have to be. You can usually get decent prices on room sized HEPA units by Holmes and Honeywell on ebay for around $40-80 depending on size. Otherwise just make sure to keep the area in and around your mushroom grow very clean and free from clutter or debris and you'll be OK.

BTW, that vicks unit isn't really a "cool-mist" even though that's what they advertise it as. It's a spinning disc ultrasonic. Most cool mists work by pushing air across a "wick" that is soaked with water from a resevoir. These SUCK for mushroom grow humiditification, however that Vicks unit you have there is one of the BEST small humi's we've ever seen for a small grow. We got one sitting in the bottom of our ghetto edible chamber at the office!

Perlite is definitely a good option, but it really only works well if you are doing some kind of cake based growing, or using smaller trays of substrate/casing which are then placed into a larger terrarium. Perlite relies on surface area to create its humidification effect, and for many people surface area in a chamber = possible fruiting surface space.

When you are using the entire tub for bulk spawning methods and have substrate spread across the entire bottom of your container then you have to use some other method of humidification, like a piped in cool-mist/ultrasonic or manual misting on a daily basis as needed.

I wonder if having the output moved on that VICKS model has effected the amount of mist you are getting out of it?

I didn't bother to look at your picture, the cool mist i have used are different.

**EDIT**: Just realized that wasn't QandA's setup... LOL

Anyways i have about a 2 inch layer of wet perlite in a rubbermaid thats about 3 feet by 2feet. With only acouple cakes sitting in it. They cakes are nice and wet and the humidity is way up there, constant 75 degrees. Before when i was just using the cool mist for humidification the cake was dried out and i saw NO signs of condensation on the walls. Oh well, the cool mist works well for air circulation. It's going off for about a minute every hour.

^ I had the cool mist running 24/7 for two days. The humidifier dried out the cakes so badly. Once i added the perlite layer i started to run it for a minute for every hour. Your saying i should run the cool mist 24/7 along with the perlite? Wouldn't that just dry out my cakes again?
