I've got it boys! Haven't been able to stop thinking about figs the last few weeks.
Any of you have some cool figs? Tasted some cool strains? The extreme Level of Diversity between strains of Figs imo is far greater than strains of any other fruit. Flavors like Melon, Cherry, Peach, Brown Sugar, Honey, Raspberries etc...
The only established fruiting fig I have is the Strain "Panache" variegated fruit with an incredible strawberry jam center

Some other strains I am Growing currently are.. Black Maderia Black Madeira KK White Madeira #1 "Old Suck n Fuck" (A Wild Specimen I collected from a creek in Fairfield, CA) Celeste White Adriatic Black Mission Chicago Hardy Yellow LongNeck Olympian Ronde De Bordeux Violette De Bordeux Desert King Improved Brown Turkey / California BT Florea Golden Riverside
Some Strains Im dying to get my hands on are.. Jolly Tiger I-258 Smith Improved Celeste Black Celeste LSU Tiger LSU Hollier English Brown Turkey Peters Honey Little Ruby Bordissot Negra Rimada Martineca Rimada Paratjal Rimada Unk Pastiliere Negra D'agde Ischia Black Campaniere Col De Dame Blanc Col De Dame Rimada Col De Dame Mutante Col De Dame Blance Negra Col De Dame Gris Col De Dame Gegantino Col De Dame Roja Col De Dame Noir

Now this is what I'm talkin bout!
I was just out in the garden earlier taking cuttings from my trees!
I have Mission, Chicago hardy, and a a couple of others that I failed to remember what they were
Mine had a rough winter though, as it got below zero here, which killed all of mine back to the ground. So, no breba crop this year
But, as you know, Figs are survivors, and they are coming back out quite nicely
If you ever want to trade some of your cuttings, I'd love to have some of your Awesome strains to add to my collection

I'm in Zone 7a, I want to grow some fig trees but I'm trying to figure out the best variety for extreme winters and summers. I've heard the black mission is pretty resilient.
Also have you heard of the Fignomenal variety?

They are sensitive to wet summers and early frosts. Most can take down to 18f without dying back.
If your areas problem is that it gets wet and cold before figs ripen then you want early fipening varieties like Ronde De Bordeux, Celeste, improved Celeste, Campaniere
If your problem is wet summers there are splitting resistant varieties like Smith, Improved Celeste, White Madeira #1
If your problem is freezing cold winters there are cold hardy varieties like Hardy Chicago, Olympian, Ronde de Bordeux, LSU Tiger. Like Homboy said though ^^ even if they do Die back they come back strong if they are big enough.
I have heard of Fignomenal but I dont know anything about it :O

I'm in zone 7 too, and all mine do great!
Chicago hardy and Black Mission are two that I have Growing. I forget the other but it makes huge honey tasting figs that rival all the others.
My Chicago hardy that died back to the ground during the winter. It was about 9 foot tall too. Alas, it could not take the one below zero night that we had over the winter.

Black Mission.

Unknown.

This one branch has been trying to put it some leaves for weeks now. Not sure what variety it is. I think it's a Chicago hardy, they just seem to be the only one you can get in the stores around here.

Looking great!
Chicago hardy does well in so many grow zones, that it's going to always be the main fig that you see being sold in stores

Mine too! I'm in 6b. I only have Chicago Hardy and this past stupid winter wiped all the branches out. It also killed one of my 12' young blue spruce trees and badly damaged the other two Now the fig it's bouncing back very strong with lots and lots of shoots. This Fig variety seems to be slightly unpredictable in when it's going to fruit.

Ah, that sucks about the spruce
But good news about the Fig!
But yeah, my Chicago hardy is growing back pretty well, but I doubt I'll get much fruit from it this year. We shall see!
Good luck everybody

Beautiful plants all around! They come back strong from the frosts.
I found someone selling golden riverside on craigslist. Hit him up and he had a nice ass fig orchard with 20+ strains
I bought Golden riverside and an Olympiam. He gave me a tree called "Florea" too.
A local Nursery was having a sale and selling trees for $10 so I got Desert King, Yellow Longneck and Improved Brown Turkey

So maybe y’all fig people could lend me a knowledge branch. I got a giant ass 3 year old dig in a pot throws fruit last two years. Only problem is it’s basically growing on the ground not upright under its own weight. Long stems with giant canopy.

Sup Feegros
Visited the mother tree of Old Suck n Fuck yesterday to grab some cuttings and check for brebas. Get a load of this beauty! Unbothered, Moisturized, in her lane, Focused, Flourishing, living her best life. (Doesn't appear to form brebas though) Figs begin ripening at the end of August.

There is a fig forum called ourfigs.com Great people on there but they have an outrageous language policy. I complemented another members fig the other day by saying "GOD DAMN!" amongst other things and a question. A moderator removed the word "God" From the post... Their loss. They not only banned organic positive expression but also this bad ass fig that I described as tasting like watermelon. When I'm ready you Shroomerites will be the first to get this killer wild strain

Here is a Link to the Inaturalist observation for the mother tree. with more pics https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/133185867
Also here is a Pic of my baby figs growing indoors

Does it have a main central trunk? is that sideways too? If the branches are still flexible enough you can stake the tree, and tie the side branches to one another to keep them up at your desired level. you can cut them free in a year or two when they are strong enough to hold their own weight.

Breba crop is done, main crop coming in, starting with Ischia black and Flanders.

This guy originally had his face buried in a fig. I guess he wanted me to get his good side!

Thank you Turtle, there are some nice sized fruits on the trees for sure. Hopefully the birds will share with me! When the Purple Smyrna ripens I'll post pics of those, they get tennis ball sized.
Good luck with your cuttings! I have some 1 year old 'trees' that need to be moved to larger pots.

Plus an unknown variety that has survived In Tennessee for probably decades.
Olympian is an English brown turkey.

Holy Fuck those look good man... The striped ones are panache?
I got to try a new strain of fig the other day! My desert king ripened its first fig and god damn they are delicious... Green fig with a tart berry flavor followed with a deep spoonful of honey flavor. So good! Desert king is a San pedro type fig which means that without the wasp it will only ripen breba crops on last years wood. main crop figs will drop.
This strain can be found very easily in hardware stores accross the US.

I read Olympian is similar to English brown turkey but has a distinct Peach flavor.
I have what is known as the California brown turkey sold as "Improved brown turkey" which is very different from English brown turkey so I guess its a bad comparison.
Some old lady saw me fishing and invited me to pick some of her figs. not sure what strain but man they were tasty!

Cool thread
So, this is the single biggest fig cutting that I have ever taken. It's about five feet long. Anybody think it will take, or is it probably too big?
I'm trying for an "instant tree" so I have head start on it, when it's ready to go out this spring.
I'm hoping it will root and then I can re-pot it into a bigger pot. Then, by spring it will be ready to make fruit. That's my hope anyway.
You guys think it's possible?

The "Old Italian Man" method of propagating fig is to just cut off a stick about that size and just shove it several inches into the ground.
Or you could probably cut it into 7-8 smaller cuttings.

Probably not. It needs to be either in soil or in a refrigerator (or somewhere 30F-40F) wrapped up so it doesn't dry out.
Do you know which end is the top and which end is the bottom?
What do you mean by super cold? What zone are you in?

Yeah, that was what I was talking about. I was thinking of taking a bunch of cuttings and just sticking them in the ground outside my window.
They wouldn't dry out either, as it's super humid and damp here 24/7 during the winter.
I'm a wimp when it comes to cold, so anything under 50 is too cold for me, haha!
That being said I'm in zone 7b, and right now the highs are in the high 40's, with lows in the high 20's to low 30's.
And yes, I know the top end form the bottom

They are in the ground and are roughly six years old. I'd say they are about seven feet tall or so.
My stupid neighbors let their side of the fence grow up and out of control, and it blocked my figs from getting any sun last season. Needless to say, my figs couldn't produce because of this. This is why I need to start more and move them away from the fencing.

Ok. Sounds like you're not getting a lot of dieback in the winter.
I've never done it this way, but I think I would wait until just after your last frost date to take any more cuttings. As for the one you already have... I dunno.

Well actually, they have died back every winter but one, and that was the only time that I got a breba crop.
They grow back from the roots and attain a height of about eight feet by the end of the summer.
We had a zone 8 winter that season, extremely mild.
It used to snow here when I was a kid, but no more now, thank goodness!
Anyway, I'll just wait on those and see if my big cutting will root indoors. I'll consider that a feat if it does because I have never taken any cuttings bigger than a few inches, nor can I find anyone else that has either.
Thanks for the replies bother man

Oh. Well, shit.
You might want to take some cuttings, then. I'm not sure how cold it has to get before they start taking damage. I've heard 15F-20F, but I'm sure it varies from one tree to another.

Yeah, I'll see how this one does, and wait a little closer to spring
I'm hoping we have another mild winter, and my trees wont die back to the ground. I'd love to get that breba crop, to make up for last seasons fail.
fingers crossed!
