APE when to harvest and possible concerns
    #28361096 - 06/15/23 03:42 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

So this took way longer than I expected but after adjusting the room temperature I noticed some fruiting bodies over night

Should I be concerned that they are all growing from the original colonized substrate layer up around the sides of my coco coir casing layer that I added two weeks in?

These are my first monotub attempts and grow attempts in general. I started with grain bags and let them fully colonize for about 10 days. I then layered the grain in my monotub with substrate from north spore. After about two weeks the network looked really colonized and healthy so I thought it was time to initiate fruiting conditions by increasing fae and adding a casing layer of coco coir. Another two weeks pass with no fruiting, and I just watch as the mycelium slowly takes over this casing layer I added. I finally increased the temperature in the room the last couple days and today I noticed a monster in my tub!

Now back to my question, seems like the biggest bodies are growing up around the sides of the block from the original layer. Against the walls. Should I be concerned and how do I know they are ready to harvest?
I’m noticing lots of other pins now forming on the very top layer but I’m assuming these big boys will be ready long before all the smaller guys that are just starting to pop up?

I don’t want to disturb the top layer but should I dig up around the sides to give them room and maybe a dumb question but could there be a lot more formed between the original layer (4weeks old) and the casing layer (2weeks old)?

Thanks for any advice, I have two tubs of ape going, the last 3 pics are the second tub

Caps are getting blue and soft,
and simply don´t grow anymore.
These can go a bit more.
A liner or compressing your substrate would help you against side pins next time.
Have a read here mate.

Gotcha thank you yeah I thought painting the outside black was enough but now I see and understand the use of the liner as well, I’ve seen what looks like black yard waste quality trash bags pretty much?

Yepp, trash bags all the way.
Not just for shrinking with the substrate
preventing evaporization to favour sidepins,
but also for easy harvest and fast cleanup
by just lifting the liner carefully out.

Definitely would come in handy, I had someone on Reddit recommend moving to a bigger a tub and I was wondering how I’m the world I would go about that. That would help

Should I expect to harvest all at once or pretty much one at a time as they become ready? What happens if you harvest too early or late?

As you don´t have a full size flush it doesn´t really matter.
Pick them one by one if you want.
I like it more to be a full flush,
harvest off completely,
to give the substrate some recovery time
to prepare for the next round.

I think I may have harvested a few too early, should they still be safe to test out?

Doesn´t hurt, sure they´re safe.
When you harvest is up to you,
but it´s not bad to let them mature
