Slow/stalled rye advice
    #28360956 - 06/15/23 02:08 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

I mistakenly bought some plastic LC lids with syringe filters for my grain spawn. I’ve since learned that those filters might not provide enough ge and have made better lids, but I’m left with a bunch of jars which are about 80% colonized and seem to be progressing very slowly beyond that. Myc looks healthy to me and is evenly distributed, but seems very slow to fill in.

My options seem to be to unscrew the lids a little (and risk contam), change the lids to better ones in a sab (and risk contam), or just wait it out and see what happens.

I’m pretty green, returning to this wonderful hobby after many years, and would appreciate advice on what to do.

Got any pics? You should be perfectly okay just backing the lids off until they are slightly loose. A lot of people don't even use filters and that is called unmodified lid tek. Literally just a slightly loose top.

I think that would be safer than encouraging someone not yet comfortable in an SAB to change the lids.

All look about the same, this is at about 5 weeks.

I’ve been nervous about the idea of loosening the kids but will give that a shot.

If those lids are the ones I’m thinking if they always stalled and they suck ass (for me)

What's your grain prep procedure? I'm wondering if the grain might be a bit under hydrated.

Nothing to really worry about. A lot of people here do it.

I soaked for 4 hours with a little gypsum, boiled 10 minutes, then tossed between colanders for about 10 minutes to let moisture evaporate off. Then in the pc for 90 minutes.
The grains have started to look much more dry in the past week or so.

Update: loosening the lids did the trick. Within a couple days some of the jars showed obvious renewed growth. I loosened the remaining jar lids a little more and they took off too a couple days later.

Thanks all
