What to do with contaminated spawn

Had some great flushes with Rye Grain and BRF.
However, I dont have the cleanest place so I've lost a fair few boxes to contam before they became axenic in my time. If you're stubborn like me and dont want to just throw away the contents after lots of waiting. Take the contaminated spawn far away from the good ones, open it up, and using a sterilised blade, cut away all signs of contam. Make sure if you do this inside to wear a mask as contam spores aren't something you want to breath in.
Then break up the 'healthy' mycelium (I know its not but yada yada), get a houseplant that need repotting, and put the mycelium in there.
Cover up with substrate (I'm using coco coir not pasteurised)
Now this method isn't fool proof and in my experience it doesn't always work or last long, but its fun. Any yield you may get is very small but this isn't a technique for good harvest. Its to put use something you'd throw away, to give a bit of razzle dazzle to your houseplants. Note, this only works if you do have a fair bit of mycelium left and I still wouldn't recommend you eat any mushrooms grown from contaminated spawn. Especially if you already have healthy fruiting bodies growing. It is also pretty harmless. Most likely trich will take over the mycelium after the first flush, but trich is not dangerous to houseplants and is actually a very good anti-fungal treatment. If you are worried about the spores getting into the air, apply another casing layer of substrate that will bury it to be absorbed by your plant.

As a side note, could anyone tell me why some of the mushrooms go white and start to crack? My guess is sun exposure but it could also be contam. Any info is appreciated.

Are you sure you didnβt lose your boxes to contam because your spawn wasnβt clean?

Yeah I normally grow batches of spawn as a precaution. In this case, 2/8 got lost to contamination. The other 6 are very healthy.

so just the outdoor thread would be the place to post this and arguing your spawn wasnt contam already is a very closed minded way of looking at a problem, its always from two places, spawn or sub. you should listen to screwup

Didnt know that thread existed I can pop it on there to be honest! Thanks for letting me know. Also I know why they were contaminated. Both boxes had contamination starting from the air filters. They have been used before so the repeated autoclave warped the plastic. I know it was risky to use old boxes but the games the game

Ima be real it has nothing to do with your boxes and air filter. It comes from poor quality spawn man (usually). Unless you mean your SFDs on your jars were bad then yeah or that you donβt clean your shoeboxes.

I actually do think heβs referring to the SFDs on his jars. He said repeated autoclave and warped the plastic. Assuming not metal jar and lid. He might be right or on the right path! It was worded in a way which made me think shoe boxes.

well that would make a difference yes, and totally agree that it sounds like boxes with airholes instead of jars with SFD's or any type of filtration

Sorry if I worded that badly? But Its the SFD for the air flow that caused contamination. The warped plastic resulted into the SFD too close to the BRF. Eventually moisture created a contact point between the SFD and the BRF which allowed contam to get into it (both times). and all the contam was coming from the SFD's. Mycelium that was injected in the middle of the cake was fine, the contam came from righter under the SFD's both times. The six other spawns tubs are from the same syringe and theyre all fine? Does that make sense now. These are not fruiting bodies im chopping up, they were inoculated and failed to become axenic.

I've seen a few people do this. But I've also seen people just bury it in their backyard and get similar mini growths. Is there a reason you prefer houseplants, other than potential munching from pests or other creatures outside? I'd think having infected substrate lying around would increase risks of it making its way back into your grow space.

Where I live, conditions outside are practically uninhabitable for cubensis. So you might as well just throw them away. Apart from that, I find just burying old spawn under soil or coir locks it all away. Eventually it will die out. Besides, I think its cooler to see them grow miraculously in your house than out in a field to be eaten/picked/destroyed etc. But I think its cool to plant them outside and I would also if it was more favourable.
