I second takeaway tek. Iโve had really good results in combination with a seedling heating pad, keeps the humidity up. Take heed though and just let them sit there and do their thing. I killed about 45 loph seedlings by overwatering โฆobsessively everyday not realizing all the condensation buildup running back down the sides would be detrimental. Ouch. Donโt do that, please.
With my lophs I started making a few holes week by week at about 4 months to begin hardening them off, replanted at 6 months.

Ouch that Hurts Soloist, but hey, live and learn and teach us what NOT to do! I'm trying to see if loosing 45 Loph seedlings is as bad as loosing a giant 4 foot San Pedro with 5 or 6 beautiful pups, probably only a year away from flowering to the freeze, and me forgetting to bring it inside.. DERP! Sorry I got sidetracked, I can Third the takeaway Tek, but why not try it with half your seeds, see how you like it and then start the other half?

these are some very sad stories to hear i hope you get back to that position with another cactus soon! good idea with the seeds though! i think i will do takeaway tek primarily because of the amount of support it got here, but i have extra san pedro seeds so maybe i will experiment with some of those.
thank you for the reply

I have experimented with different levels of alkalinity and moisture, to recreate a desert, but did best with rich humus under a humidity dome, that could grow mosses. Moist, but not soggy.
My best guess that some organic material must be rotting in sand or a cleft in the rock, and the seed would naturally require that degree of moisture to break dormancy. Possibly, at the drip-line of the crown of a shrub.

thanks for my trichocereus i usually use something like 1 part soil, 1 part coir and 2 parts perlite. do you think it is worth using less perlite and more soil? i threw some sand in last time too and it worked nice but i can't remember the ratio i used
thank you for the reply

I find that the coir, peat, and potting mixes are totally inert, until they are well decomposed after a couple of years, then become an excellent, slow release fertilizer.
Any small gravel, broken eggshell, or rinsed coal can effectively take the place of perlite, to help with aeration.
I have effectiverly used river stones in place of surface dressing, rather than mulch.
But, in nature, ideal conditions are found under tall shrubs and between outcroppings, which make for a nursery at this tender stage of life.
Once they get older, they will appreciate being put against a hot, stucco wall, on a concrete slab...

It's easy to say, just copy nature.
I've been trying my whole life, to learn exactly what I am looking at, and will be smarter by the season.
Maybe, some well-intended person can get a head start from this.

IME make sure you have a fine soil, Iโve had good luck with I think Jiffy seed starting mix. Had a bunch loph seeds sitting in a takeout tek for about 3 weeks annnndd ZERO sprouts. Realized that maybe my soil was to course, I had used some succulent soil that was laying aroundโฆ Took the lids off and let it dry out over a few days, pulled off the ungerminated seeds with a tweezer and re-did the takeout tek with the seed starting soil. Literally a day and a half later I got 6-10 sprouts!

What's good about the fine soil -- if you sift it through large mesh, then window screen -- is that a lot of hungry insect life will get separated out.

I throw my takeout tek, at field capacity, in the microwave for 1 minute to kill of any nasties. Let it cool for a little then sow. So far Iโve good results.
