Grave of the Fireflies
    #2835828 - 06/28/04 10:26 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Never heard of this movie before.. I just picked it up because it had a cute picture on the cover which made me think it might be something like Spirited Away. (that movie made me want to have kids just so I could show it to them.)

Well this was NOT a cute, sweet movie for kids. Never did I expect to see wartime grief and suffering portrayed so powerfully in an animated film, or just about any film at all really.
This was about as close to a traumatic experience as a movie has ever pushed me. It lets us see children on a such a vivid and personal level struggling to survive in the midst of war and it's as graphic and grueling as any live-action war flick I've ever seen, but seen through the eyes of two kids who have no involvement in the war themselves, it's far more intimate than just a lot of shit getting blown up and soldiers getting rockets through the gut.

It's fairly slow moving and the animation and the imagery (and the sountrack) is extremely beautiful.

Anyone else seen it? I was surprised I'd never heard of it before. I bought the DVD but I don't know if I'll ever be able to watch it again.

That's a pretty grim yet powerful movie. I didn't expect it to be anything like what it turned out to be. Great movie none the less. I think I might have shed a tear or two. :smirk:

Interesting. I watched it 3 days ago too

It wasn't exactly what I had expected, but I liked it.

One of my favorite ghibli films though it is one of the sadest animes I have ever seen. Not a good one for kids. :crying:

Or is it? When "Grave of the Fireflies" debuted in Japanese theaters, it was shown as a double-feature with "My Neighbor Totoro" :smirk:

I'd better like my kids watch "Grave of the Fireflies" than "Tom & Jerry" :yesnod:

For those who didn't know, the movie is based on a book by a man who actually lived almost all of what you see in the movie. His little sister starved to death as in the movie and he has spent much of his life since trying to deal with it. For me, the idea that what you see is basically what actually happened makes it a tougher movie to watch.

Incidentally, Roger Ebert lists it among the best 100 movies ever made.

It is hard to beleive that stuff like that's happened in the past, and happens now.

More specifically, the part when his little sister eats the imaginary food(dirt/mud clods) was hard to watch. Ahh, it really is a powerful movie. I'm looking for a friend who has the dvd right now. I recommend it to everyone.

Define kids...

5-10, or 10-13?

I'm not a parent but I can't imageine a non-teenager would get anything out of it. Might as well just show them 'Saving Private Ryan'... it'll make about as much sense.
