real life outdoor cultivation

I work for Mother Earth News learning about new stuff and passing it on. The topic of the season is mushrooms -- growing them at home in natural, sustainable ways. In the interest of research and good eating I fruited an oyster kit and then planted the remains in an enriched sawdust bed covered with cardboard, then straw. It's going to town out there. I have a hot compost heap cooking, almost ready to receive the running mycelium from a couple of portobello kits. Has anyone out there started "garden" mycobeds with kit leftovers? Just made up that word, mycobeds. Like it?

Oh yeah. Try planting this monster. Its not called the Garden Giant for nothing.

Stropharia rugoso-annulata

I started a small patch under my parsley and now its popping up everywhere in the garden. Even in flower pots just sitting near the garden.

I also planted an old patch of Agrocybe aegerita and it fruited but didn't persist or spread.

I'm always disposing used blocks and contaminated spawn in my garden and cover the mycellium with grass clippings. I didn't really expect much but they often fruit even without any special care except regular watering. Stropharia rugosoannulata is the best, but I fruited also few Lentinus edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus djamor & Pleurotus eryngii this way.
