At first glance that looks like a Lactarius.

If you cut the gills with a knife, does it bleed a fluid? If so, what color is the fluid, and does it change color after a few minutes?

Is the flesh brittle? If you break the stem with your fingers, is it fibrous like most mushrooms, or does it break like a piece of chalk (irregularly)?

Happy mushrooming!

It's definitely a Lactarius species.

The only Lactarius species recommended for eating currently are the ones that bruise greenish. They are predominantly orange or blue in color before bruising.

Happy mushrooming!

Speaking of which I just found specimens that appeared to be the indigo variety by the greenway-I would assume these are NOT edible? Curious to know.

Doc, those look like what i found the other day,

doc also, about Lactarius indigo;

There is another varient of L. indigo which i find every summer here in florida, it doesn't exude any blue latex, and smells fruity, probably one of the better edibles in florida but ive never eaten yet.

The reason i never ate them before was i didn't feel they completely matched up to descriptions of L. indigo, and read there was a varient or two of the same blue Lactarius mushrooms in the southeast.

Kimbroughs book "Common Florida Mushrooms" treats L. indigo as a common florida mushroom, but he might have over-looked them as actually being one of the varients; but the picture of L. indigo in his book looks like it might actually be L. indigo.

I dunno. With all that said, i would be willing to cook some up and eat them, this year. But not willing enough before this year.

superblingtheory - Lactarius indigo is one of the green bruising Lactarius species, and it is considered one of the good edibles.

GG - L. indigo is not the only Lactarius that has that blue color, so there is a reasonable chance you've found one of the similar species. It's very similar to the green bruising orangish Lactarius species, where there are several. I didn't pay that much attention to the tiny variations that mark them until last year, when Dr Orson Miller pointed out that I had collected both L. deliciosus and L. rubrilacteus and thrown them together - they were growing within 4 feet of each other, and the main macroscopic difference is the latex color.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks guy's.

GG-I saw the ones in your post right after I posted these,I thought they looked similar, but,I'm not that good at ID'ing them yet,so I didn't mention it.

I would like to find some really good native edibles and try to cultivate them.I am building a greenhouse soon, just for that purpose,so if you find any PM me!
