Anyone else seeing a big increase in ticks this year?
For the last month every time I've walked through my yard I end up with at least one tick on me. Multiple times I've been driving or at work and had one crawling up my arm or leg that must've hopped on me on my walk to my car. It's crazy, there's always been ticks here but never even close to this many.
We've also always just had wood ticks and never had deer ticks, but my wife pulled a deer tick off of her recently so those are here now as well.

I haven't seen any yet in central NC, but haven't been deep hiking or anything yet, really. I did get diagnosed with acute Lyme many years ago, so don't become lazy with not checking for ticks after every hike.

Yeah they've been an issue. Especially since a lot of areas aren't getting hard freezes.
The little bloodsuckers are the worst. I've heard permethrin soaked outfits help while exploring the woods. But it's toxic to cats so I've not tried it.

I just searched if limes can treat lyme disease and results such as this came up:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but permethrin is only dangerous to cats in liquid form. And once you spray permethrin on your tent/clothes and it dries, it stays there, even through several washes. and is completely safe for cats and humans.
I know a lot of my hiking buddies swear by permethrin especially when camping, and some of them have cats... so.

I'm pretty sure you're totally right and I just never looked into it further. Cool to know, because ticks are proper bastards.

Basically the way it works is you spray your clothes with permethrin and then it dries. Make sure to took up the proper mix ratios. Then you're pretty much good to go. Not only does it repel ticks, but it kills any that touch it. And it works for lots of insects... ants, roaches, ticks, many others, etc. Not only repels but KILLS! So basically you spray all your gear... from the socks, to the tents to the sleeping bags- everything(except the cats)_... and then you're pretty much good to go, and it super safe once dried. Look into it!

Also from what I understand, once it dries, even if it gets wet, it doesn't rub off, AKA fade or become dangerous to cats again. That's the one thing I need to look up but I'm pretty sure. Read a story from a guy who washes his shirt 3 times before the permethrin faded.
I've used permethrin dozens of times for other pest reasons and it works miracles. Yes it is a chemical, but relatively speaking safe when handled properly, and I mean wayyy safer than others things that kill bugs IMHO

If one didnt feel like using a bunch of premetherin, Eating a lot of raw garlic is a good alternative in helping to ward off ticks. That's what I do at least anyway. Plus Garlic is awesome and really good for your blood.

Yeah i noticed this in 2021 back when i was in Maine. The ticks were killing full grown moose they had gotten so bad in certain areas and the locals were saying that it was because maine isn't receiving as much snow anymore. I had never experienced maine prior only from 2020-2021 but from what everyone told me in jonesport they used to get like several ft of snow and now only average a little less than a foot and 2021 barley got any snow at all.

Doesn't work for me personally, at least with mosquitoes, but given that I eat garlic almost every day, and I seldom get ticks, I would second this. I just wish Garlic worked for mosquitoes, but it does not seem to
Also, the beautiful thing about permethrin is it works on all of your gear too, like shoes, tents and tables, etc. I don't think there's too many negative downsides to permethrin. except cats AND WE aLL LOVE CATS
Also, seeing animals ridden with ticks in places they can't reach is just heartbreaking/painful to see.. but hey, such is the circle of life.

I treated my shoes with permethrin but the ticks are quick and crawl right from my shoes to my pants/legs. I read stories that ticks die on contact with clothing that's been treated with permethrin but it didn't work that way for me, I actually picked ticks up and put them on my treated shoes but they were fine.
Literally as I'm posting this I'm sitting in my car picking a tick off my leg. We've found 5 of them in the house, we've seen them crawl in through the smallest gaps in windows/doors
It's a nightmare lol, and I live in the suburbs. I think I'm basically going to give up on prevention and just rely on checking myself every morning and night

Man, same here. There have always been a lot of ticks around, but this year it's been totally nuts. I basically get one on me every time I step outside. I've probably been bitten 5 times in the last week. Fortunately I'm allergic to the bites so I notice them right away, but otherwise I'd be pretty freaked out about Lyme disease. I can't believe they discontinued LYMERix!
I hope this big increase in the tick population means they're going to be devastated by some kind of pathogen soon. I'd hate to think that climate change is making this the new normal.

Yeah over the weeks when a friend would come over he would get a tick on him every time just from the driveway to my house, shit is insane this year. I didn't even go mushroom hunting cos I'm over the tick bites....

I haven’t had any this year. I usually get a couple and had to take doxycycline a few times when things looked suspicious.

Ya I haven't had any yet this year either but it's only a matter of time.
