I don't even think the ink in a printed piece of paper can be detected by x-rays.

Correct. And as far as I know first class mail is not subject to discretionary inspection. If they were to inspect it a probable cause would be needed in order to obtain a warrant for the inspection.

I wonder what extent of x-ray radiation can a spore print survive?

New sterilization technique?

I don't think anything would be visible through the aluminum foil (metal) in a metal detector.

Aluminum is metal, but most of what you use it for is not very dense. A thin sheet or aluminum can, most xray machines would go right through.

But it would also go through the spores and the paper, so still wouldn't be identifiable necessarily.

Depends on how big the print is and how it is folded it might look like a coin battery cell or an actual small coin in the X-ray

Doesn't sound like a welcome item for transporting via airmail anyhow. I understand they disapprove of lithium on planes nowdays, dunno to what extent though.

The corner of the envelope will be lightly torn, and they will insert a small camera in there, if they want.

While you are arguably involved in paraphernalia, the letter of the law says that whatever spore, seed, or materiel is legal, provided that it contains none of the controlled (chemical) substance, to the best of my knowledge.

Shippers, payment processors, and online stores may red flag you for that, in an abundance of caution.

No worries. It looks like a piece of paper.
Share the spores all over the world.
