1st monotub. Lots of pictures, learning points and areas for development.
    #28347818 - 06/05/23 04:24 AM (1 year, 7 months ago)

Hi guys, I hope your all well today. :sunny:

I got my first monotub setup this morning and thought I'd share my progress. Feel free to comment and any advice is as always much appreciated.

Here's my spawn and substrate:

I used a CV recipe but had to adjust the water content.
650g coir, 2 qrts verm, 4 qrts water to 5 qrts spawn.
I actually used 3.5 qrts of water, after squeezing to field capacity I measured the excess water which was 400ml.

Here's my 1st monotub setup:

I've followed the advice of the forum members, current teks etc and went straight to fruiting conditions. My monotub is 19"x 12" at the base and the substrate 3" deep.

I do have a concern for FAE as I'm growing inside a closet, there is no breeze to help move air, so I've ordered a small 1w mini plug in USB fan just to help circulate the air. It's to be used outside the tub close to the outlet. I don't think it's so powerful as to dry out the substrate or cause issues but I'll monitor it:

On another note I had 3 qrts of extra spawn so I made a few more buckets  why not its summer:

While this is running I'm still working with a few other strains on agar, but I'm still having issues with my agar recipe unfortunately.

MYA recipe:
Agar agar -10g
7.5g - light malt yeast extract
0.25g - nutritional yeast
500ml - water 500ml.

On the advice of a forum member I tried adjusting the agar powder to 7.5g and the light malt extract to 10g but same problems. I'm gonna try 1g nutritional yeast next time too. I'm also going to try slightly boiling the ingredients in a sauce pan until it froths before bottling and PC'ing.

I'm gonna try a different brand of agar too, and maybe even a PDA recipe. It is holding me back a bit but I'll get there eventually I suppose.
Here's the issue - aerial mycelium and mycelium that looks the be eating through the agar:

These agar dishes are only 6-7cm wide for perspective.

Here's my brands too just in case I'm making a mistake somewhere with the ingredients:

Thanks for taking the time to read this guys, feedback is welcomed and I hope you have a nice day.

Thanks for being detailed! Before continuing please read my signature!

I can’t comment on your agar recipe as my partner handles that but hopefully they come along and provide some insight.

As for the growing setup looks like you have most of your bases covered.

As for the spawn I think it looks a little bacterial. It might just be the pictures as it’s kind of far away but it looks a little marshmallowy on the top and looks like there might be overlay.

Double checking your spawn material water saturation might be a good place to start to make sure you aren’t providing a dream environment for nasties. Then double check your sterility practices to make sure they’re on point.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. Please give the jars another look as they appear super white to me. The spawn is brown rice so that may be the color your seeing, at least in part? I could be wrong.

Quick point, you can right click on any picture attached, open it in a new tab and then zoom in further if that helps.

I did notice a very few drops of yellow in the jar, not much at all, and read that its metabolites? and that it's nothing to worry about. I'm waiting on synthetic filters for my jar lids too but I believe that I'm doing my best with sterile practices short of using a laminar flow hood.

As for my spawn material water saturation this was my first time with rice, and I felt that it was a little too wet after preparing and drying so I did actually give it extra time to dry. I then did the paper towel test and was worried that it could have even been a little too dry, however you may be right in your assessment. Rice seems difficult to measure water saturation with it being such a starchy substrate, at least compared to WBS.

Most of the jars were ready 2 or 3 days ago, but 2 of the jars had slightly less grains transferred to them during their inoculations so I waited. That might explain the overlay on top of some of them, as well as the rice being difficult to fully shakeup by hand. Also I inoculated these 1 qrt jars 11 days ago, temps have been slightly higher with the summer coming in too at 26c/79f. It's usually 24c/75f.

Thanks again, I appreciate your comments and it's gave me a lot to consider.

What kind of filter are you using on those jars, any why the keep the foil on?

I'm a noob and this is my first grow.

I'm using unmodified lid tek, jars quarter turn loose. I keep the foil on cause I just feel there's a tiny bit less chance of contaminants getting in but I'm probably wrong. I don't think it's doing any harm whilst I'm waiting for my filter discs.

I found it very difficult to find the full size synthetic filter discs I required in my region, so I'm waiting on an international order for them.

Synthetic jar filter lids:
70mm
0.3 micro filtering efficiency
Hydrophobic
Fully autoclavable

I think these will go great with my ball mason leak-proof plastic jar lids. No modifications required ✌️

Edit: typo/spelling mistake

Taking a second look at the spawn I still strongly think most if not all are bacterial they are growing over themselves and if it hasn’t been long since they were ready it’s a good indication of bacterial spawn. The mycelium just looks way too dense imo

At the stage they’re in it might be safer to run them in shoeboxes. However I ran a bacterial spawn in a monotub and so far so good, got a QP off of first flush.

As for the lids I recommend you check out Bods lid tek it’s what I use and once you get the hang of making the first couple it’s easy and lasts a long while

Overly thick, white mycelium usually indicates bacteria.
Leaving the foil on traps moisture from the pc cycle potentially transferring contams through filter and inhibits ge.
Fingers crossed your spawns ok, telltale obvious signs are condensation in jar and exposed grains at the bottom in particular but there’s some good threads on identifying contam in case you’re unsure, otherwise your setup looks fine and you’ll learn to fine tune as you go 👍
Good luck!

Ok thanks for the input. They've all spawned to the monotub and buckets though so too late to make changes. I'll probably go back to the wbs in future. I'm learning a lot here.

As for the lids I think I'm set once my 70mm filters arrive. I've been recommended to use 70mm filters woth unmodded plastic lids and I think that'll be good. I'd really prefer not to put holes in lids. I do appreciated the info though 👍

Also damn a qrt pound 😯 what would I do with a qrt pound? 😆

Save it lol, I dont know what to do with it xD
And it was a shotgun PE I was dumb enough to inject spore syringe into spawn bag when I started.

Thankfully I have the excuse that I didn’t know about shroomery at the time lol

Thank man 👍 I did notice a little condensation in a few jars the last few days but put that down to the extra heat as I wasn't sure. Also I've never worked with rice before. No exposed grains at the bottom though in any of them. The spawn didn't feel wet and no water came out when the jars were emptied.

I hope its OK but its starting to sound like it might not be.

I'll keep going, hopefully things will be better once I sort my lids with filters as well as my agar troubles.

You’re very likely to get fruit, the colony is just weaker and more susceptible to other more serious contamination from being in a weakened state. At least that’s my understanding.

So don’t feel like you’re not going to get anything from it because you’re more likely than not to get some good fruits.

Keep us updated and ask questions on the forum, it’s the best thing you can do.

 yeah I've listened to some dumb advice off YouTube myself. Fortunately I found shroomery early and have been put right on a few things.

It's weird trying to unlearn other people's bad advice. I second guess everything I've learned up until now and if I can't remember the source I don't even mention it. The last thing I want is to spread bad advice just by typing it into this forum for someone else to pick it up...and continue the cycle.

I’m glad, good luck on this monotub!

I still can't get over those numbers. Did you say a quarter pound yield on your first flush of Penis envy? Was that from a multi spore grow and what was the length width and depth of your fruiting chamber?

I used a 66 quart steralite bin with purple handles, 3 1.25” holes along the top of the substrate (CVG) on each side (which was about 4”) and a hole on each side of the top short sides.

It was a MS to grain, which resulted in a bit of bacterial contam.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it gave me a good 1st flush for self preservation so it’s unlikely I’ll get much on this next flush.

It was actually 5oz dry

This is frank btw:

He was 35ish grams wet

Hi I thought I'd update my threads, so here is my monotub atm:

See the two patches on the right? I was concerned about that.

The top right of the tub took a little longer to fully colonize but got there in the end. Temps have been high in the closet and I'm thinking maybe it'll do better outside of summer. The pins on the side are interesting too

I think I've got my surface conditions right as I've spawned to a small bucket once before, but I've no other experience. It looks good to me.

Any feedback with this is more than welcomed. Thanks.

First flush coming through of that MDK. I only harvested the ones that broke their vale:

My biggest so far:

I've taken some clones but I'll probably store them away as I've a few other strains/variants I'm working with on agar. I'm looking forward to seeing the second flush on this.

I think my liner may be too thick as its not sticking to the substrate anymore. Side pinning may be an issue. I don't know what to do, maybe try a thinner liner in the future.

Gotta say, whatever was going on for you, you took a good approach, didn't do the super out of date,
crackpot stuff that so many do when they're fairly new to cultivation and you applied some common sense.
That's rare around here. Well done with the successful grow

:happyclaps:

As a side note: Compress the shit out of your substrate when you spawn to bulk and it can help with sidepins.

Thanks for the pointers  I hope to keep developing my practice, streamline/simplify things and share my progress.

The forum and it's members have been largely supportive since I arrived, giving me live advice when I needed it and sign posting me to current teks. I hope one day I can bring something similar to the table.

Something related, I'm on my 2nd flush on 3 of my buckets with no liners, and 3rd flush of 1 bucket and haven't seen a single side pin yet. I read on another thread that compacting the sides down after soaking works like you say, and I've had good results with that. Things might get a bit tricky doing the same in my monotub due to it's size but I'm sure I'll manage.

I'm already considering a different set-up replacing the monotub with another and making only holes up top, so I can soak and float. I'll not sure, I'll need look into that down the line.
