If one is an addict, sobriety is a super power * 4
    #28347712 - 06/04/23 11:34 PM (7 months, 20 days ago)

If one is usually weighed down by a substance, then being off the substance is when they are truly at their best. Consider the effects - they are less weighed down, their thinking is quicker. They might be more anxious, but their thoughts will be turned to important matters and they can make the anxiety productive. They aren't going to be as easily side-tracked, and they'll be more likely to complete the tasks they set out. In other words, they are a little bit better in every way.

I'm assuming we're talking about a drug without serious withdrawals, or a situation in which one is past the withdrawals, past the relapses, truly sober. In this situation one becomes enhanced from the situation one was at before - if they were high every day, they are now a little bit healthier every day.

So it is ironic, because people often use drugs precisely to feel sharper, to feel better than they usually are, to feel less depressed and more energetic. But for the chronic problem-users, it is sobriety, removal of the drug, that gives energy, sharpness, stability and fortitude. The situation becomes reversed. If one cannot handle drugs, sobriety itself becomes the best drug, the surest one to get one where they need to go.

Often, a challenge with ending long term drinking and drugging behavior is having the patience to stop long enough to experience this reality.  For example, even if getting drunk seems to feel like a level 5 or 6 pleasurable experience, you have to be willing to stop for a while to experience a level 8 pleasure to see that being drunk was not as great as you once believed.

The belief "Once an addict always an addict" is a belief that keeps people locked into the obsessive love affair with their favorite intoxicants.  That's why some people say, "I've not had a drink in over 20 years, and I am still a full-blown alcoholic."  This belief keeps the focus on the love affair.  Folks have many excuses why this is a good thing.  Some insist fear keeps them sober.

That kind of language is held almost religiously by the 'AA' or any other '12 steps' type of program. They insist people see themsleves as powerless over their addictions, often insisting that they submit to a vague 'higher power'. Needless to say, such an approach is not for everyone.

I have 1 year 5 mos sober.  I finally went to rehab after getting hooked on meth.  The recovery community has been super supportive.  I still have thoughts of smoking weed often.  (I've smoked cannabis since I was 19)  I now live in a sober living house where we are randomly drug tested.  I still eat mushrooms off and on.  I'm much better off.  Its amazing how much time can fly by while your stoned!  Now I'm a little overwhelmed with how much time I've lost.
