How to actually identify and counteract chemicals
    #28346465 - 06/03/23 11:22 PM (7 months, 21 days ago)

Please help me find the right place for this if it isn't here:

Ok so we teach kids that there is nothing you can do to sober up from alcohol any faster when they are young. I think we all know that's bullshit and the same is true for a huge number of chemicals, just picked alcohol because it is apparently ubiquitous.

Let's say you eat something and feel "a bit odd" Let's say you even think you can kind of narrow it down to gaba or something analogous to it. Sure you can call poison control or go to the hospital but they kind of have the "nothing you can do to sober up" mentality too and aren't very helpful.

Is there somewhere to go online to quickly look up the actual cure... particularly something that is actually doable for those of us who aren't very far along our phd path and don't have a storehouse with exotic solvents and such laying around. By actual cure what I mean is something that actively and selectively ends the effects and ideally removes the substance from the body or binds it somehow etc. And finally how does the average person then get the things necessary to do something about it in real time when they have no background in this at all?

Basically a list of "off switches" that are actually safe and exist outside of one laboratory on the 13th floor of one university in one refrigerator. Not necessarily antagonists at the same receptor which will often create their own problems but rather things that just sort of quietly turn off the offensive substances and return the person to a neutral state. Even better would be some sort of silver bullet that can "reset" from an odd quasi-stable configuration leading to weird effects to a neutral one given any chemical cause but crucially without causing it's own problems like antagonists do.

and what if you can't really narrow it down too well... is there a very good flowchart that can help with that?

and what if it isn't just a "substance" but is more like an infection virus nerve problem etc use whatever word you use to describe "things that don't go away when you wake up the next day?" (or hundreds of days later... things that absolutely demand an active solution)

PS please for the love of all that is don't give me some kind of new physical calamity or think that I WANT to have to do this now...

On an related note if anyone is out there and actually DOES want to have to do this now I have a huge pile of store bought food (mostly unopened) with what I can only describe as weird toxic shit in it that I would love to donate to someone with the time and desire to extract and study it... toxic shit includes (probably... I don't have the skill to efficiently show any of this at this time... at least not with the level of specificity necessary to do something about it) living organisms that make other toxic shit, viruses, pharmaceutical chemicals etc. Seriously I have pallets worth of stuff please take it away from me... it's free as long as you PROMISE YOU WONT EAT IT.

Medically, yes, you can reverse the effects of drugs. The classic example is narcan. The deeper problem is that in some cases, the cure may be worse than the poison.

There are cannabinoid antagonists that work great and aren't known to be dangerous. There are also ones for opiates, and psychedelics. But when you start getting into other stuff, it gets tricky and dangerous.

I'm going to skip over the lessons about the dangers of ACH antagonists and GABA antagonists since you already seem to be aware. But basically, if you want to reverse the effects of a drug, the only ways you can do it are dangerous if you're dealing with the wrong systems. For some receptors it's fine, but for others not. There's nothing that can really just "turn off" a substance like that other than the stuff you're probably already aware of, antagonists, reverse agonists, etc.

It's not about the drug or this or that, it's just the reality of the fact that certain receptors like the GABA receptors are dangerous if you try to tip them the other direction.

So what you're looking for basically doesn't exist outside of that, sorry.

This may sound like babbling nonsense but one jargon word I've seen for stuff like this is clathrates which work for things like cyanide directly so I know the principle of directly acting on the toxic thing at least exists on some level. While cyanide is a much simpler molecule than a lot of these things I can't find any physical law that would prevent the concept from scaling up.

And as for things that don't work on the chemical itself but work on the human system instead ("receptors"): it would be really nice that given people have shown that they know how to use a combination of chemicals to reliably create "disease states" given a wide range of starting conditions you would think there would be some combination that could reliably create a "healthy state" also from a wide range of starting conditions. Particularly "resetting" sensory nerves in a safe way would be helpful.

I just don't believe that these types of cures don't exist because people (the combined knowledge of all of humanity as a species) are so incredibly skilled at really selectively destroying the human body and the exact same skillset is required to do what I'm talking about. It just doesn't seem to be talked about in bio 101 which does make sense because it requires a ton of knowledge and its hard to communicate something complex to someone who knows pretty nearly nothing but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all.

Edit and while I'm just letting thoughts out, quick question that maybe deserves its own thread but is so stupid im usually afraid to ask it... are neuro receptors and genetics and infections all just people looking at the same thing and giving it different names? like is one person's bacteria another person's pancreatic cell? Is one person's "chronic disease" another person's "side effects of a repeated overdose of something"? Is one person's immune system another person's "hormones"?

How many of the medical specialties are as said before looking at the same thing and calling it something else? How much of it is giving a separate name to every verb as if it was a new noun?
