San Pedro Went Horizontal!
    #28193033 - 02/18/23 12:56 PM (11 months, 3 days ago)

My 7 ribbed bb I grew from seed 6 years ago.

Had a big snowstorm out here in the Sonoran desert. I covered my plants before I went to bed and woke up to this guy completely horizontal due to the weight of the snow. He's tall enough that it was bound to happen eventually I guess.

It's concerning how low it split but I have alot to work with. Anyone have suggestions on what to do from here? Looking for ideas

If it were me, I would take a knife to it but they are resilient and with support it can scab over. I would personally be fearful of infection, would cut it clean and let both recover.

You could just cut it on the break-apply some sulphur to the fresh cuts and have two plants.
The base will pup and the cutting will put out roots overtime after which you can replant.
Alternatively
Push a stake into soil, tie and support it.
It'll grow just fine.
These plants are extremely resilient.

Slap some sulfur on it and stake it up. It should heal and restabilize itself but it may be best to chop there and let it pup. Root the cutting.

I would just let it heal on its own, or cut it down and then make a log with it or several smaller cuttings.

Yeah, that cactus will never stand up on it's own. I would make three cuttings out of that sucker!

Just stake the plant with a strong bamboo stake or length of rebar and let it go.

I agree with sheekle and kanna! Cut that sucker! And surprise, you just quadrupuled your pedro plants. they root soooo easy just make sure to let them dry out and wait till you see roots poke out before watering( usually about a month and a half I would guess?

Oh snap sorry I just saw this post was 2 months ago. nice update!

What is up with the number of spines? I just found one of my pedros has four spines, isn't that really rare? Can the number of spines effect poteny?... or can it mean something else?

I've been told 4 ribs are more wanted by shamans for being a better feeling experience and rarity; 4/6 are the best and 5/7 being less sought-after but still good. Something to do with corresponding to the spirits of cardinal directions.

Or it could be the surface area to core ratio of 4 ribs. Not sure how much yield it would have compared to 8, much less spines to remove. Being geometric is pleasing to the eye too. I'd love to find a 4 ribbed guy
