So I recently birthed some pink buffalo Brf cakes dunked them for 24 then rolled in verm. I put them in the water tub for 48hrs. Maybe a little over. And when I cracked it open there was a mildly sweet smell, very similar if you’ve ever made hooch or homemade wine. So I know it’s a contam. My question is should I just wait and see? I have a feeling it’s a certain one with this spot that is a little off looking but can’t be for sure yet. Or should I just isolate that one cake? Pics below. Thanks.

This is the “spot”

Sorry too lazy to type it all out, this reminded me of your question.
I had a similar smell after 7 days restricted FAE. You should be fine, keep an eye on it.

I think a big thing that’s being possibly overlooked is that mateja is probably not using ms syringes bought from a vendor.  While pf is seemingly resistant to bacteria, it’s still in the cake if it’s there and if you choke out your tubs for any period of time, that’s creating a favorable environment for that bacteria to reproduce and give your cake undesirable results.

I made a lil two cake water tub/bag… tons of holes poked in the bag from day one.  Heavy ms made from swab —> SS.  Cakes killed it.  Lots of FAE.

If you want to choke your stuff out because you think it helps and you have clean cultures, have at it but these organisms didn’t evolve to have that done to them.. they grow outside.  You think Mother Nature is like, “hey, let’s not have any wind hit those cow pies down there because they’re not ready fruit yet”

When it’s a battle between anaerobic organisms and aerobic organisms and you want the aerobic one to win, give it air.

Also, if anyone has ever made cakes and completely taped up the inoculation holes, what happens?  The cakes stall.  If myc grew better in high co2, wouldn’t the cakes colonize faster with taped up holes?

Hope this helps

I have a analog hygrometer (for reptiles) placed inside the tub (using the exact same IKEA box as the OP) and it doesen't seem to go over 80% humidity. The lid is sealed as tightly as it can with with some weight placed on top.
The box is located on top of a small wooden box above the tiled floor, so it's not touching the cold floors, however it's pretty close to it if that makes any difference.
Should I mist it with a spraybottle or trust the process?

Trust the process and your eyes. Toss the hygrometer. They are inaccurate and chasing numbers results in bad grows.

Follow the tek and then maintain surface conditions.

Am I correct in assuming that surface conditions need to be met only once the mycelium actually shows up on the surface? Or should I be misting yet uncolonized coir ( has been in there for less than 1 day so far)?

You're correct

Leave it closed until like 50% colonization and then try to maintain conditions. Do what he said in the OP regarding misting.

Thank you Mateja, hvala ti.

I've tried SGFC and did not have any success. Yes, the verm was too fine and I did other mistakes too. I'm having a lot more success with your tek!

This TEK is great!
But I don't like adjusting the lid every time after misting and want to to make it a bit more clumsy-proof.
So I was thinking to just take the ol' Pasty's ez dialed mono top hole pattern, slap it on there & leave the lid closed. Does that sound sensible?

I figured the bottom holes shouldn't be necessary since there are none in the water tub tek.

Brilliant tek, have done a first successful flush. Now I've re-dunked and rolled the cakes. Could I leave my tub closed like the first round with cakes ? or go straight to cracking the lid a little ?

I can coat the cakes with vermiculite and not coco, right?
I have problems with coco to stick to the cakes.

You can but I think coir works better personally. Just grab a small amount of properly hydrated coir and smash that coir on the cake. Doesn't have to be a ton. Most will fall off. The cakes can take some pressure.

I can see small pins starting to poke through now, it makes to sense to crack to lid right ?

Cheers for confirming, ended up doing it last night as felt right after seeing a couple fresh pins. For the first flush, after dunking and rolling I could visibly see the cake regenerating new myc before any pinning started. So the second flush I did exactly the same, now I'm just seeing pins rather than new myc generating. Do you normally re-roll for the second flush ?

I prefer to re-roll but it's not required.
