50/50+ Casing Problems? (PICS)
    #2834410 - 06/27/04 09:09 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

We have four (4) casings following the 50/50+ method. Verm, peat moss, oyster shells and hydrated lime.

Two (2) casings are pinning: Koh Samui and Lipa Yai. These pics are of the casings being in the terarrium after 4 days. Can you see any signs of overlay? There are a couple areas that seem to be very bright white and somewhat matted.

The other two (2) casings are not pinning: Creeper Sx and Blue Meanies. Any ideas why these aren't pinning? The mycelium network seems to be a bit on the grayish side. We patched a few spots early on with vermiculite.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We would like to know what we can do to get the best harvest this time around and what we might do in the future to have better results as this is our first casing.

Watch the gray areas and make sure it isn't the start of web or the green. Both start out as a light gray myc looking spots that spread pretty fast

50/50+ casing tek with peat moss and PERLITE????
Is this an error or ignorance from my part???
If you can case iwth perlite, and if I have trouble finding verm (but still have a little bit) but can get my hands on perlite; and if you can case with just verm, Can I case with verm and perlite?
Has anybody done this?
If you have, can you give me some instructions please???

You are about 90% away from what I consider overlay on the picture with vermiculite. If it gets worse, and you get layers upon layers of shiny matted mycelium then you should probably scratch. Although I have had seriously overlayed casings pin with time. Definetly listen to Magash and watch the grey ones...

My advise is give them more time. They will pin when they are ready.

The perlite is a type-o. It was vermiculite that was used.

Just use straight coir, its much better as a casing medium then verm.

90% away. Does this mean I am close to overlay or far from it?

Yes. Overlay is generally described as a fully colonized casing layer. You are 90% away from that. The true definition of overlay is mult-layers of mycelium that has totally colonized the casing layer leaving none of the mix visible. You can usually see through the layers and the mycelium appears shiny (dead).

Layers of cottony mycelium on an allen casing. You can see rhizomorphs poking up. Pins will eventually form given time. When the mycelum becomes matted and shiny, it is time to scratch and apply a thin new layer of casing material.

Too late to help the Koh Samui and Lipa Yai a bit?

What are some tips on getting a more even pinset before you even get to the patching stage? What can be done while making the casing?
