I wanna grow peyote....
    #2834279 - 06/27/04 08:09 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've been thinking of growing some peyote at home (I live in Canada where peyote is 100% legal) and just let it grow for like 10-15 years or so, since it's an endangered specie.
Recently I found this shop where they sell some 2-3 year old buttons, but before buying I'd like to know if growing peyote requires a lot of care wor if it generaly grows pretty well by itself, even indoors.
Btw I have a big window oriented south, so the plant would have 6-8 of direct sunlight every day if it grows indoor.

i believe, though i may be mistaken, it is not all that difficult to grow peyote. checkout ebay, they have some good peyote deals.

Put a screen on the outside of that window to break up the sun and you're good to go. Want some seeds?

I'm guessing ebay won't send peyote buttons to the states correct?

I guess i have everything all wrong. Maybe i should look at more images of peyote to understand it more. So you grow a main plant and buttons grow out of it?

yeah, the button's take a while to grow. and a peyote plant needs to be about 3 years old to start producing decent sized buttons. thats what i've been told, not sure though.

Actually, I think the button is the plant itself when you cut it above the roots...
American natives usually eat six to a dozen young buttons (couple of years maybe) to induce their religious trance if I am correct.
What grows on peyote are flowers, which can take about 10 years to appear on a button.

And I'm probably not gonna start from seeds, I'll just go and buy a 2-3 year old peyote at a store here in Montreal so I don't have to start from nothing.

And Grizzly, what would be the use of putting a sreen on my window since I live in a temperate/moderate climat even during summer. Shouldn't I try to give the plant the maximum sunlight it can get?

Peyote prefers indirect sunlight. It sunburns easily I've heard.

anyways, your approach seems wise, most people wanna graft their peyotes and eat them right away as if they grew as quick as mushrooms, if you can afford waiting 10-15 years you'll sure be well rewarded...

Yeah, exactly
Since I have the time and the patience to wait that long.
So I figure it could only be more rewarding to myself when it comes to the actual eating...

i read in hight times years ago & also somewhere else is you grow a small peyote then graft the top to another cactus that grows faster then you can get a button in 1 year.try searching "peyote graft"

In fact, I have read a little about grafting and I don't really want to do it this way...at least not at first. I'll see how "fast" it grows for some time, and if I get impatient I'll graft it. Simple as that.

Why not graft some and grow some on their own roots? At the moment I've got 50 peyote seedlings, plus a few grafts, and two slightly older specimens, and have just planted 40 more because the others got sunburn, and I thought they might die, but they are now beginning to recover...
Check out ebay for seeds, you can get some good deals and they're not hard to germinate and grow.
Anyway, I'm planning to graft about 10 or 20 onto pereskiopsis (which should be arriving any day now! :smile2:), to eventually give me seeds and some nice big plants (which I might then root), and I'm going to grow the rest on their own roots, to eventually get some really special plants. I'm not even sure if I'm going to eat any, I just like having them around!

want my personal hint?
start your own cactus collection from seeds, lophs, trichs, whatever you feel like (if you pick the taste you'll soon be collecting many many species, its a bit addictive).
the good thing on starting from seed is that you get many individuals with a good genetic charge, variegated plants or odd varieties might appear.
at the same time you can order dried cactus (torch is good) and have an experience...
but i'll foretelly you - go for the seeds at least. you seem inclined to it and mescalito will sure receive you well.

Riverman - when I found my buttons in the wild, 99% of them were under spikey bushes. Where they got light, but it was broken up.

So, either put up a screen, or put them under a bush that lets a lot of light through, but blocks out a little.

They will sunburn. And they will go straight to hell if you water them too much.

As for the question about the plant "putting out buttons" <- false.
Each plant IS a button with a root. Each peyote consists of ONE BUTTON attached to ONE ROOT. When you take a button you hope for new roots when you plant. When you harvest a button to eat, you cut it at the very surface of the ground so it will put out another button soon, maybe even a few buttons. <- that's where that thought about multiple buttons from one plant comes. It only happens after the original button is cut. More form in it's place.

Don't graft. The peyote on a graft is WEAK WEAK WEAK compared to a REAL peyote.

Cheers. Best of luck to you.

Thx for the info Grizzly !
Didn't know direct sunlight was such a threat to the plants since they grow in the desert.
I'll try to find something to block some of the direct sunlight or find another place for them (I have to grow them inside because where I live temperatures drop pretty low at night even in summer)

And as for grafting, I had read somewhere it was best for the peyote to grow slowly on it's own than to graft it because it then becomes full of water, weak and have a lower alkaloid percentage.

Here's a site of some guy in the UK growing traditionaly lots of plants and selling them. Theres also some info and some links about peyote in general

each plant is ONE button? if it's a single button, yes, but peyotes DO pup, haven't you ever seen a caespitosae williamsii? they form a carpet of little (at first) pups...
as for the roots, i've seen already multiple taproots from single or multi buttoned (not cut, cultivated) plants...
i've already seen multiheaded fuckers, they're cool.
on grafting lophs being weak - that would be expected as any other cactus in optimum growth...

hey grizzy, no pictures to share?

I think this is more of a definitional problem than a conceptual problem.

Peyote does not naturally require diffuse light, peyote will be fine in diffuse light from bushes or out in the open. It's most often the case that home grown specimens get burnt up because of original growing conditions. Not all peyote in the wild is found under bushes, and just because one has only found peyote under bushes doesn't make it's habitat or growing conditions diffuse light only. There are other factors that contribute to the multitude of variables found with peyote growth.

You will tlak to others who report peyote growing out in the open in direct sunlight. So for one to make a hard rule based on only what they found is simple bad science.
