A Couple Florida Mushrooms Today: ID Help Needed
    #2834001 - 06/27/04 06:09 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everybody,

Its raining in southwest florida and i went on a mushroom hike.

Found these two mushrooms, i think they might both be edible but im not sure.

First we have what i think might be the edible Lactarius hygrophoroides;
Found growing along a nature path;

Ok and secondly, we have the big-mommas; the first time i ever spotted these things; completely enormous mushrooms.
-Hopefully these are the edible Macrocybe titans, im unsure at this point,
-Found growing along a roadside in mulch;
-Huge. The caps were too big to put into my paper lunch bags i use, and i mostly just grabbed the buttons (cut them with scissors) but the largest of the mushrooms were growing in huge clumps, huge fat mushrooms, incredible; i had to break a few of the larger caps into pieces to fit into the collection bags, and there were about a dozen or so other large caps in the cluster that i had to leave behind because i filled three lunch bags full of these; you see some of the buttons are as big as a damn lightbulb. And at that rate i would have needed a few plastic grocery store bags just to bring home this one single cluster.! :cool:

Keep shroomin,
Here they are hopefully someone can help with an ID on these; thanks

Possible macrocybe titans;

GGreatOne234 in southwest florida

They do resemble them. Based on size alone there's a good chance of it. They should have white spore prints (they used to be in genus Tricholoma), and attached gills, although a lot of Tricholomas have gills that are so notched that they are mistaken for free (the other part of free gills, of course, is that the stem is readily detachable).

Happy mushrooming!

Thank you Toxic, i was hoping you could reply to this. :heart:

With the info in the "Common Florida Mushrooms" book he says that there are several types of Macrocybe, but only one has ever been found in florida, M. titan.

I sliced one of the caps last night and fried them. They were pretty tastey.

HEY!

Take a closer shot of the buttons, especially the cap margin and the gills. I believe I found something similar about a year and a half ago, but they were all buttons.small. They fit the description for M. titans, but it didn't seem they would get that big. Not all M. titans are huge.

Those Lactarius are the same ones that I find here in Pinellas Cty and have eaten. They are not particularly tasty. Most probably L. hygrophoroides.

When I click on the pictures on the top that I made over a year ago, why does it send me to the main message board page?

Magma, thanks for the heads up buddy.

Yes you pictures do not enlarge for me either.

What you posted also look like Macrocybe titans. They're yummy.

The Lactarius ones smell sorta strange once dried (like fresh bread-dough or something), i haven't eaten any of them yet, and we did go out and collected about a dozen more or them the other day

Keep shroomin
GG
