Small test bucket...before spawning to monotub. * 1
    #28334132 - 05/25/23 01:08 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

Hi guys hope your well today, the sun is shining :sunny: I should say to begin with this is just an experiment and a learning process for me before I move on to my monotub. This is also my first go at things and I gotta say what a lovely smell of mushrooms.

I'm using 1 qrts spawn with 2 qrts bulk (C.V.50/50) in a small bucket for fun. It's just under 3" deep with a 7-8" diameter. It took a while to get the bulk substrate to field capacity but I think I got there in the end.

I was gonna let it colonize then at 80% or so surface conditions start fruiting, but I'm learning that most people are now initiating fruiting conditions immediately so not sure what to do there. I was also gonna rig a polystyrene bag (or cling film even) over the top with some holes for FAE, unless I can think of something better. I may have to fan out of necessity I'm not sure. Yeah I know its very basic and might not show great results if at all, but like I said it's a small experiment.

If it works, and I'm just speculating, but another bucket such as this could be used underneath with water and a small fish tank heater to maintain a steady temperature during the winter. I suppose if it works it could be used in a bigger bucket, possibly modified, but then again why would you? I don't know, portability maybe, or outdoor growing in the garden in discrete buckets? I'm just guessing here.

Any advice is welcomed and appreciated.

My grain to grain transfers are starting to colonize too which is good to see. I was worried there with the brown rice, it seemed very starchy.

Hey again.
Since you're committed,  I'd start in fruiting. Just poke a few small holes in whatever you choose to cover this in. Keep an eye on conditions and add more if it needs more air after it colonizes.

I would definitely not recommend using a aquarium heater to heat the bucket up. It's old tek that nobody recommends anymore. It works but it is uneven heating and is better to just leave the room at a comfortable temp.

If you’re gonna make this a thing just make one thread where you update on your bucket tek . Then if someone decides to do it all the info’s there.

Ok thanks, makes sense. I'm kinda new to using forums. I don't think it'll be a thing but I'll keep that on mind. Team cling wrap lol 🙂

Well here's an update on my MDK test bucket, 4 days (96hrs) in. It looks on track to me with no signs on contamination. What do you think?

I got my grain jars for my monotub mixed too, they are 5 days old. I think I over filled them as they were difficult to mix up. Maybe the rice doesn't help either.

I got some 1st transfers and new incos. done last night too, hopefully I'll find something nice. I'm eyeballing a few sectors on those mckennaii 1st transfers I made a few days ago too, for future study.

I think I'm doing ok, just keeping things moving. I'm still getting a lot of aerial mycelium in my agar so I'll need look at my technique there. I use nutritional yeast flakes not powder. I doubt that's the issue but I just can't figure it out.

Agar MYA Recipe:

Agar powder - 10g
Malt extract - 7.5g
Nutritional yeast flakes - 0.25g
Water 500ml

Any advice as always is much appreciated. Again this is my first run at things.

The one time I had myc growth that looks similar to your plates, it was the food coloring. I tried a new food coloring for the first time and the three different varieties I was working with all had this weird growth that looks exactly like yours

What are you using for grain jar lids? Unmodified or filtered?

Agar recipe looks fine to me. I use the same recipe, but with 1g of NY.

Bucket looks good to me. When it fully colonizes make sure that the surface conditions start to appear because you may have slightly too much FAE, but I wouldn't adjust until full colonization or if it completely dries out.

Thanks for that but I'm pretty sure that its not the food coloring. I've only just started using food coloring and I've had the same issue with plates with no food coloring for some time. I'm considering trying the nutritional powder, or even a completely different recipe with honey or potato...I'll need to look into that if I can find a solution.

Hi man, thanks for the quick response.

I'm using ball mason leak-proof unmodified jar lids slightly loose, and I'm waiting for those synthetic filter discs that we discussed previously.

I like to pour my plates early so I can see if they got contaminated before making my transfers, so I'll make some in the next few days with 1g nutritional yeast flakes. I'll mortar and pestle the ny before adding it, see if that helps, but I doubt it.

The bucket, when you say make sure surface conditions start to appear do you mean primorida or little droplets that turn into pins? Thanks again.

Ah shit, my bad man. Forgot we discussed that previously.

I mean that when the surface is mostly colonized, there should be beads of water that start to appear on the mycelium.

If there isn't, you should make them appear with a gentle mist from above and keep them like that.

It's too early to be dealing with that though. Was just giving you something to keep an eye out for since I've never had to dial in a bucket for proper fresh air

I'm rooting for ya.

No that's well good to know in advance rather than trying to fix a problem later. I'm learning a lot here thanks.

I hope I get this one right as I've got the monotub soon. I'm also glad I did this in prep for the monotub.

I was thinking this bucket, or shoebox type container, might be good for growing shrooms for spore prints. I read sometime ago if I want prints I should harvest after the veil opens, and that if spores land on my substrate no new mushrooms will develop. If this is true then it might be better to take my prints from a micro grow such as this. Or even just the last flush of a larger monotub  I dunno that's kinda hard to determine for me atm having no experience, thanks for the support though

If you want to easily grow shrooms for clones or spore prints, I think brf is the way to go personally. Or if you have agar ready just a shoebox.

That being said, the whole "if spores land on your substrate no pins will form there" is just bad info and I am not sure where that started. It's definitely not a thing.

It does make it harder to get the correct surface conditions in my opinion though, since it changes how the substrate absorbs water where it lands.

You have a window of like 6-12 hours after the veil opens before the spores drop on the substrate. You could keep an eye out for that or just not care and let one or two drop spores.

Or you could use sterile swabs and use them to collect spores instead of waiting on a spore print.

See this is an issue for me and I'm doing my best, but it seems all my prep and reading before I even came to this forum is old practice or simply myth. So I'm doing a lot of supposing and saying a lot of if's.

Thanks again mate your info has always been on point and I appreciate your manner in correcting me. Others are quick to laugh new comers off which isn't conducive for anyone. I see a lot of new people coming through in recent threads too and it's always the same issues. It must take a lot of patience to respond to the same problems every day with temperance.

No worries man. I'm not an expert but I've spent way too much time here and have tried to pick up the current best practices and up to date knowledge where possible.

If you keep your info to the past 5-10 years from here and stay off Reddit or YouTube, you'll be in a pretty good spot. You can always use the search tool and search for posts made by TCs too.

When I first started it was on a mix of 20 year old posts I had read from here, and random posts from reddit. Not great to be honest.

If you're ever unsure of anything, you can get clarification from the Quick question thread.

Hi I thought I'd keep this thread updated until the project is finished, success or failure, so here are some live pictures.

I think its about ready to pin. I see what appears to be loads of primordia and there are plenty of fine water beads resting on the surface which I've sprayed on. You may not see these in the picture but it is coated.

I think I've got the surface conditions and humidity right, but I'm not sure about fresh air exchange. There's holes in the cling film cover and it's not exactly sealed over so I'm thinking it should be good.

Any thoughts or advice?

edit: perhaps the primordia is actually aerial mycelium?

I don't see any pins yet, but you have decent surface colonization and your surface conditions look good.

At this point, there is nothing more you can do but maintain your surface conditions and let the mycelium do its thing

Nicely done. I'd personally poke a couple more holes in the top, but you're gonna be fine if you don't. Just don't go overboard and let it dry out.

Glad it's working out for you.
