I have a hard time keeping those alive. What kind of potting mix do you use? I want to get another one and maybe repot it right away.
I have some generic "carnivorous plant" mix (made by my nursery) that worked ok for my pitcher plant.

God damn that thing is huge!
@yuggoth. 50/50 peat and perlite with nothing else. Carnivorous plants will die if they are put in soil with any nutrients in it, the only source of nutrients they accept are from their prey of from a very light foliar misting with a dilluted maxsea grow. Most of them also need to be left outside in full sun or placed under a grow light. They are temperate plants that require a winter dormancy.

Ha ha, maybe, time will tell . Unfortunately a lot of it will go to waste as I got called away from home and my SO is refusing to harvest and dry most of it.

Yep, what Piggy said is right on the money. I left most of the soil it came with and filled in the new pot with long fiber sphagnum moss. They don't like minerals so I washed it with distilled water to <20 ppm total desolved solids.

Thanks guys, I'll give that a try.
Fortunately, my tap water here is a blank slate, almost nothing in it.
One last question ... How should I water it? My pitcher plant I can keep absolutely soaked but that doesn't seem to work as well for the venus flytraps... Though, poor soil could have been the problem.
EDIT: OK I have been doing everything wrong, I found a video that covers basic care.

Our tap water is pretty good, 45ppm TDS. My plants get pissy about anything above 15 or 20ppm so they get distilled water. I keep all of my CP's in shallow(ish) pots and trays like that VFT. Usually keep a couple cm of water in them. Occasionally I drench them but they like to be well aerated so I don't leave them swamped for long periods. I usually bottom water, but once in a while I'll do an big top water to flush them out to avoid mineral creep.

Great, thanks. I have actually spent the last hour on a venus flytrap deep dive. Thanks to other projects I actually have everything I need to give one an OK home so I am probably going to the store now to get another victim. In the past I never took them out of the store pot, now I see they never had a chance.
My TDS is 35 and if I don't have success distilled water is first thing I'll change. I guess people sometimes use water in this range but occasionally flush with distilled? Well anyway, another rabbit hole. The VT can keep my mushrooms company while I learn about both of them.

Picked up 4 carnivorous plants today: sundew, pitcher, venus & butterwort
Once I get my account back I'll get pictures. I want to make a movable bog garden type thing so I can bring it indoors before winter as I was really successful with them last year with lots of flowers but foolishly left them outside over winter and they all died
