Presto Precise digital pressure canner
    #28330027 - 05/22/23 02:02 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

Hello I am wondering if there is anyone that has experience with the Presto Precise digital pressure canner.  I have recently purchased this and am very excited to use it.  Unfortunately I don't see much discussion about this canner in particular but do believe Presto to be a reliable company.  I would love to have just a little rundown on it for anyone who may have come across this product.

Thanks!

Sounds like you'll be giving us the first review! Looking forward to it.

It does look so nice but expensive.

I bought the presto precise 10qt. Unlike the presto precise 12qt, it isn't recognized as a canner by the FDA. I am unsure if this means it doesn't get to the same temperature, but the 'high' pressure setting seemed to work very well so it's possible it does get to the same temperature, and they just don't have it as an approved canner for legal labelling reasons.

The 12qt at least boasts of being able to get 240 degrees. The sensor goes by temperature and not pressure. This is close but not quite to the temperature of water at 15 psi (250). I'd add about 20 minutes to the PC cycle with this on the high/canning setting.

Unfortunately, I can't give it a good review as mine stopped working about half a year in! It no longer gets to pressure, but I still use it as a steamer. I think there's a problem with misaligntment with the lid and the guage resulting in steam escaping, as I've observed when I try to get it to high pressure. I did drop the lid once, but I don't think that caused the issue - I think it had a hard time getting to pressure before that and the problem developed progressively. If I knew a fix I'd love it, as I do think it's an efficient PC, but broken is broken.

I assume your faulty Presto Precise has some kind of gasket. I would start by inspecting it. If you lubricated the gasket, counter-intuitively I would suggest scrubbing it clean unless the manual says otherwise. I had a stovetop PC that gave me problems because I figured a slippery gasket was better... In fact, it just caused sealing problems.

You can also try pressing down on the lid once the steam really gets going. Holding it down for a few moments may get the gasket to slip into place. That has worked for me in the past with a fussy PC.

In terms of how to use it's extremely easy, there are gauges and settings. You'll want to use the canning setting. All you have to do is use the trivet it comes with, put your jars on top of the trivet then add water until the water is at least touching the boottom of the jars a little bit. I think that's all your need if you are getting to the pressure but I like to add a bit more. Then hit the pressure setting for the correct time. With the 12qt version I think you'll want to use the canner setting, as that will be the correct max temperature (240). If there's no canner setting you'll want to use high.

When researching it I found this video which may help you, OP.

Ignore the stuff related to canning - you'll want to get it to that temperature for the time set in the TEK (probably 2 hours).

I'll give it a look.

I had to tease out the pressure based on the temp of 240 they give.  It comes to 10.44 PSI.

Instapot and Ninja Foodi only get up to 10.6, so it is essentially the same.

You can still use it, but you should be doubling your time.

Hey ya'll I am giving it a spin at the moment.  Hopefully all goes well! Made the mistake of already having the regulator attached during warmup process. I'm hoping it doesn't matter as I would do the same for a manual P.  Thanks again Creon!

Greetings everyone. I have been using the Presto Precise almost exclusively now and I must say it's pretty awesome.  Although I did end up getting an error message from leaving the regulator on during the warmup and no longer put it on until that process is complete. I currently have 2 tubs going and am stoked! The bottom is Tidal Wave that was S2B on 6/13 and patched today.  The top is APE that was S2B 6/20 and also patched today BUT used a 23 quart with half gallon jars. I originally had 4 jars but one contaminated and was left with 3.  After looking up info on them I don't think I will be using half gallons anymore but I made some grain transfers and used the rest for growing.  Even though it's not fully colonized there seems to be some blobs forming on top so went ahead with fruiting.

I will be providing more pics along the way.
