its the start of the second flush. they started out upright and then they started to topple over. i just checked them and they are not loose but rather settled in quite nicely. i havent been home to fan as much as i would like to so maybe that has something to do with it?

I've seen B+'s grow that big off just cased straw. And yeah, average 30-40gms each. The compost would definately allow for more flushes though. I wish shipping was based on box size rather than weight, it's just so expensive to ship. So you just put a casing layer over the compost, right?

They look like that because of high CO2 levels.

Totally untrue. They fall over because of high CO2? No. They fall over because their mycelial footing cannot support their own weight. Almost all of the heavyweights I have grown usually fall over or lean at one time while the smaller ones will stay upright. It happens, try packing your casing layer down a little harder during application.
Elevated CO2 levels cause skinny elogated stems, under-developed caps, and generally poor fruits (thin flesh, small stature, etc). Matts example is not that of one grown under high carbon dioxide. TRS has also grown mushrooms that appear normal. And on a further note, Ps. Cubensis is far more tolerant to high CO2 concentrations than most other species...

I agree, they always get connected to the network when they fall over (even merging with other mushrooms). If they fall upon open casing mix, they sprout mycelium and grow into it absorbing water. I have had a few that have fallen over and severed their main mycelial connection before it was fully mature. I should have left it grow to see if it would have re-connected and continued to mature. But instead, I cloned it

Yea i just love it... Are you still upset over the grain being better then compost thing?
Have you seen the mycobag fruits? There stems are always all distorted and the fruits are all swirvy. Joshua was telling me about his big bucket in the handfull of shrooms thread and this casing looked just like his first flush. they were tall swirvy and ha ddistorted stem structure. He said they werent getting enough fresh air.

In my experience there are varying levels of excess CO2. The symptoms that can be looked for are:
Poorly developing pin sets, including pin sets that have a high number of aborts.
Gnarly stems with vertical folds varying from mild to extreme.
Caps that refuse to open up and sometimes very small caps.
Brittle stems.
I can't say that tiny fruit bodies have resulted from an excess of CO2 in my book. Most of the time they just look less healthy.
I do think that his mushrooms were falling over due to size which was aided by the fact that his pin set was poor which may have been caused by inadequate air exchange. Notice the gnarly look to the stem in the first picture? Even your picture Matt shows signs of high CO2. Notice the slight vertical infolding of your fruit along the stem? I also believe that the fruits will exhibit these details in various conditions depending on the point in development in which the CO2 levels were too high.
Anyway, that's my take on the whole thing.

Just as an example.
These pics are from a single casing. One pic shows the fruits as grown under excess CO2, the other pic shows the same casing fruiting under good air exchange conditions. I hope these pics illustrate the issue at hand.
High CO2
High air exchange.

Sorry to bump this but TD is curious:
It seems in both of those pics the same bulk tub tek is used. But how can you really improve the air exchange if you're just opening it and fanning a few times a day? I don't see any tubes for ultrasonics etc.
Thanks in advance

you can use airlocks, there's plenty of way but w/e, maybe he's got something intersting to reply back with that might help us futher ourselves in terms of air exchange,

Fan once every 2 or 3 days..then fan 3-5 times a day...or you could put a cool mist (ultrasonic would do nothing for air exchange) tube just running in under the lid. Thats how you can vary air exchange.
It is also my opinion that those mushrooms need more fresh air.

if your co2 levels get high, u'll notice it by mushroom death....dont fan excessively...but atleast once every four hours (2/3 3-5 times a day)

When do you recommend switching from every 2 or 3 days to 3-5 times per day? I think he will be moving to a cool mist soon. TD is using the Double Tub tek presented by EatUAlive. Would it make more sense to have the tube running into the top holes of the tub or the bottom holes? My guess is the top, but I'd like to hear your input.

I do not recommend ever fanning every 2-3 days. you asked: "But how can you really improve the air exchange if you're just opening it and fanning a few times a day?"
Joshua obviously wasnt fanning enough in one picture but got varied results and better ones when he fanned properly, a few times a day. If you just meant in general how do you improve air exchange, fan more. CO2 drain holes right at the casing surface can help. So can a cool mist. That could lower the humidity though. I would put the cool mist tubes in the top if I were to add them into the double tub tek as well.. Some would do differently but co2 sinks, why fight it..IMO.

Thanks scatman.
But I thought two of the main advantages to the Double Tub tek are that no additional humidificaion is necessary, and that you never have to open it except when harvesting.
What are your thoughts?

I'm bumping this old thread because it was a HUGE HELP.
AGIK is currently harvesting his third flush from a casing tray. While the flushes were OK as far as weight and formation of fruitbodies, the second flush exhibited the same "falling over" of skinny fruitbodies that were described in this thread.
After researching old posts and trying to adjust FAE based on the advice from Josh in this thread, the third flush came on like gangbusters - growing fast, straight, thick and tall. They grew so fast and furiously that AGIK came home after two days (when he left they were fat pins approx. 1/2 cm. big) to find giant godzilla shrooms in a thickly packed "forest" growing straight up and pressing against the roof of his FC!!!
The FC is the "automated grow kit" marketed by Mushymart (who is a sponsor) and came with an automated timer for the FAE fan set to 15 minute intervals. Based on research on this Board, AGIK decided that he wanted less lengthy time intervals so he invested in a digital times with minute-by-minute adjustability, and he had been using 6 cycles per day, at 5 minutes per cycle, for switching the fan on.
After reading this thread and picking his skinny, prostrate fruits off the surface of the casing layer (they looked exactly like the "before" picture in Josh's post, above) he adjusted his FAE intervals from 5 minutes to 10 minutes, 6x per day.
BINGO!!
He has no pictures to post, but suffice it to say he has numerous fruits that look exactly like the one Josh is holding on his forearm.
If any other members out there are having this issue, I would highly recommend following the FAE trail and making some changes. This helped AGIK tremendously.
Thanks shroomery!!
And a SPECIAL thanks to you, Josh. Your before/after pictures on the same casing tray were the ultimate evidence that convinced AGIK to follow this path, and get successful results. Cheers brotha!
