why are my mushrooms falling over?
    #2832798 - 06/27/04 10:23 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

its the start of the second flush. they started out upright and then they started to topple over. i just checked them and they are not loose but rather settled in quite nicely. i havent been home to fan as much as i would like to so maybe that has something to do with it?

Holy shit, well then i guess it is worth the money, i was considering buying like 10 pounds, and then using about 2 pounds of HMC, and then some supplemental horse poo! think that is a good idea?

I've seen B+'s grow that big off just cased straw. And yeah, average 30-40gms each. The compost would definately allow for more flushes though. I wish shipping was based on box size rather than weight, it's just so expensive to ship. So you just put a casing layer over the compost, right?

They look like that because of high CO2 levels.

Totally untrue. They fall over because of high CO2? No. They fall over because their mycelial footing cannot support their own weight. Almost all of the heavyweights I have grown usually fall over or lean at one time while the smaller ones will stay upright. It happens, try packing your casing layer down a little harder during application.

Elevated CO2 levels cause skinny elogated stems, under-developed caps, and generally poor fruits (thin flesh, small stature, etc). Matts example is not that of one grown under high carbon dioxide. TRS has also grown mushrooms that appear normal. And on a further note, Ps. Cubensis is far more tolerant to high CO2 concentrations than most other species...

I agree, they always get connected to the network when they fall over (even merging with other mushrooms). If they fall upon open casing mix, they sprout mycelium and grow into it absorbing water. I have had a few that have fallen over and severed their main mycelial connection before it was fully mature. I should have left it grow to see if it would have re-connected and continued to mature. But instead, I cloned it

Yea i just love it... Are you still upset over the grain being better then compost thing?

Have you seen the mycobag fruits? There stems are always all distorted and the fruits are all swirvy. Joshua was telling me about his big bucket in the handfull of shrooms thread and this casing looked just like his first flush. they were tall swirvy and ha ddistorted stem structure. He said they werent getting enough fresh air.

In my experience there are varying levels of excess CO2. The symptoms that can be looked for are:

Poorly developing pin sets, including pin sets that have a high number of aborts.

Gnarly stems with vertical folds varying from mild to extreme.

Caps that refuse to open up and sometimes very small caps.

Brittle stems.

I can't say that tiny fruit bodies have resulted from an excess of CO2 in my book. Most of the time they just look less healthy.

I do think that his mushrooms were falling over due to size which was aided by the fact that his pin set was poor which may have been caused by inadequate air exchange. Notice the gnarly look to the stem in the first picture? Even your picture Matt shows signs of high CO2. Notice the slight vertical infolding of your fruit along the stem? I also believe that the fruits will exhibit these details in various conditions depending on the point in development in which the CO2 levels were too high.

Anyway, that's my take on the whole thing.

Joshua

Just as an example.

These pics are from a single casing. One pic shows the fruits as grown under excess CO2, the other pic shows the same casing fruiting under good air exchange conditions. I hope these pics illustrate the issue at hand.

High CO2

High air exchange.

Sorry to bump this but TD is curious:

It seems in both of those pics the same bulk tub tek is used. But how can you really improve the air exchange if you're just opening it and fanning a few times a day? I don't see any tubes for ultrasonics etc.

Thanks in advance
