IPA: Sierra nevada torpedo IPA, or hopnosis IPA.
Belgian farmhouse saison: 'with best wishes' saison dupont
Best overall: tank 7 american saison ; or saison dupont

I've always thought Stella was the best of the very big business, mass production beers. Still has a good complex taste.

I rank Guinness along with IPA's as a novelty. As an addition to a Ploughman's Lunch in the Pub you could leave feeling satisfied for a few bob cololloquial For a jolt you could sample a Guinness Export.

Man I have drank so many beers in my life, I cant even tell you if its in the thousands or tens of thousands. Of all of them, there are two that stand out.

First is a beer I had in Switzerland, Cardinal, back in 2002. Granted I was like 21 years old at the time, but it blew my fucking mind. I drank it everywhere I could find it during that trip to Europe. I even abandoned some of my luggage and filled my carry on with a 12 pack of loose bottles for the flight back to the states, which I still am wondering how they allowed that. Sad thing the brewery, which was founded in 1788... over 200 FUCKING YEARS!!! Closed in 2011. So by the time I had fuckit money to buy super expensive imported beer, I was unable to reunite with this long lost love.

Second beer, is pretty much the only beer I will drink anymore. I was a big IPA guy, loved the pine tree flavor for some reason. But the stuff was always super high alcohol content, and I like drinking 4-5 beers in a nice session. 5 IPAs will pretty much make me black out on the couch.

Then I found - Founders All Day IPA. Somehow they managed to make this perfect tasting IPA that is like 4.7% alcohol. It is fucking delicious, and no joke if I can choose one beer to drink for the rest of my life and no others this would be it. Its actually better than Cardinal, the love of my youth.. Its better than just about every beer ive ever had.

You might also like sierra nevada summer lager... hopped like an IPA but still 5%. I'll try out that founders beer.

I like ales.  American pale ale.  I think there's something called "wild ale" or "wild pale ale", I like that a lot.  Indian pale ales, I also like.  I like a porter, usually in the winter, but I don't know what kinds there are.  Sour ales are hit and miss, but when hit hit, I love em.  I'm pretty unsophisticated, but that's what I know.

Edit:  Just remembered what my avatar is LOL wheat beers are good too, I wish I could find the one in my pic.  It went MIA for about 6 years, then I saw it in a "variety pack", and got it.  I enjoyed 3 cans, then haven't seen it since!

Founders is rock solid all the way round!
Enjoy all their ales ND most their other beer.
I'm same on beer profiles as you(piney IPA, hoppy) but usually don't have seshs where I down 5..
Usually like two, so in the alcohol sense i have a big variety of iPas to choose from(have tried hundreds if not thousands), but instead of a reasonable alcohol content I go ad high as I can without it being an imperial ale.
Most of the imperial I've tried are meh, but give me a good piney/hoppy/unfiltered iPa anywhere just below 8% and I'm in Mt beer drinking zone.
I love that over the past 10-15 yrs craft beer has become such a thing, there's always something to try!!

Sometime if I haven't eaten much or for dessert (only ever get dessert if I'm only half full) I like some of the crazy stouts they got now, like weird stuff like milk chocolate stout with honey from a birds dick, I mean they come up with some wild shit.

Cheers!

If you like piney and don't mind imperials, voodoo ranger imperial IPAs have a strong crisp pine flavor.

I feel that way about the 19.2 oz cans of sierra nevada imperial, 'atomic torpedo' (9.2%). Very good beer, but it's too much beer for me at the moment! I've been drinking two 5%ers and that's still not as much as one of those cans.

Last time I put plastic over it and put the rest of the can in the fridge as I didn't want to drink it all at once... but if I wanted to get drunk it'd be good.

I will say that IPAs are by far some of my faves and one of my faves to brew.
Stouts and porters take a close second.
Sours and funky beers are fun on occasion too.

Pilsners, Hefes, and other 'lighter' beers are meh... Unless they are seasonal.

One thing I totally HATED were the overly malty beers.  Doppels, Trippels, anyfuckingBock was a hard no from me until recently.

Sour Monkey has found its way into my rotation somehow...  I love the sour and funk notes combined with the refreshing lightness.

Has anyone tried the beer 'Delirium tremens'? I'd drink this one more often if it wasn't so expensive and sold as single cans at my store (plus I'm trying to cut down on beer anyway).

It is amazing because it tastes a lot like a lager, but it is 8.5% and has sort of a more powerful flavor. Both easy-drinking and strong at the same time, it's a beer that could get someone drunk pretty quick as it might 'sneak up' on you, considering how similar it tastes to a 5% beer, but enhanced.

But I think the taste strikes a good balance, and I buy these occasionally. Crisp, not-too-malty and has this slightly yeasty note that's hard to describe, but complex.

Delirium Tremens is a classic Belgian strong ale.  It's fairly dry, characteristically spiced by the phenolic and estery properties of Belgian yeast strains, with some balanced alcohol warming due to the relatively high ABV and a bitter finish.  Before craft beer became a gargantuan movement, this was always one of my go to's back in the late 90's and early 2000's when it could be difficult to source interesting, delicious, strong ales.  If you dig DT, there are some good domestic iterations of similar style that you should consider if you have access to them.  Namely:
  • Damnation from Russian River
  • Pranqster from North Coast
  • Mischief from the Bruery
  • Gnommegang from Brewery Ommegang
  • Horny Devil from Alesmith

I've been watching this thread since it began, but as a professional drinker :tongue2: who has spent years brewing and has studied up to obtain base level BJCP certification and judging a handful of competitions, it's just really hard to narrow down a short list of favorites.  Frankly, I've tried so many flippin' beers over the years that by instinct, I almost always be default opt for whatever I haven't yet tried, in the hopes to be pleasantly surprised.  There has been such an explosion of beer on the market, that I don't find much reason to be a stalwart and stick to any particular beer, as it's far more exciting for me to sample the plethora of seemingly limitless new offerings that are always hitting the shelves.

I will for sure check those out!

I've tried other belgians like Dupont, which makes a saison and also a really strong double-fermented ale. But none of them taste quite as crisp as Delirium Tremens. Delirium tremens I could much more sip at a party and enjoy, it's not heavy or overpowering on the taste (even if high in alcohol).

Let me ask, is there a good way to bulk buy it or will I have to buy it a can at a time? At $5 for 16.9 ounces is quite expensive. I would buy the heck out of a case, if it was cheap.

I guess I should ask, how expensive was it then (as compared to inflation)? Could it be bought in packs?

I have heard people say delirium tremens was a beer that was a 'craft' imported beer before it became a big thing in America. I wonder if it's more expensive now than it used to be.

Delirium Tremens is typically sold in 4 x 16.9 oz cans in the US market these days.  There isn't much of a price break, as these 4 packs go for around $17-$22.  Before they distributed in cans, you could only usually find 22oz bombers of it, and if my memory serves me well, I recall that they were typically north of $9 a piece, so the price has come down a bit over time, especially when one factors in general inflationary pressures.

Man so many cool responses in here, I kind of forgot about this thread until again stumbling upon it. I like the different approaches to enjoying your beverage. Sounds like theres the wild ones who like to continuously experience new things, and the curmudgeons like me who have their one beer and want no other  No wrong answers though.

random beer story. About 5 years ago I recall driving with my wife and then 1 year old daughter up the coast of california, and while we were up in the northern forest area, chilling at this really cool little VRBO north of San Francisco I randomly googled Pliney the Elder brewery. Happens it was like 50 miles away, so told my wife I had a mission to run, and while she chilled with our kid at the VRBO I made the drive and bought a case of Pliney the Elder. At the time it was quite difficult to find in SoCal so to have 12 felt of riches. I drank one or two feeling like a king in the jacuzzi upon my return.

I shared many of the remaining bottles with friends over the next several months, and even doing so it felt like they lasted beyond expectation. That random adventure alone was worth the trip, and sometimes I think of driving back to grab another, or to some other random brewery for a similar experience.

Seems like a pretty nice variety there actually. Lots of Ales, and nothin wrong with that . How did you land on Sol?

Yesterday I reloaded on a bunch of booze for the wife and I. Went into freezer section and found 2 Pliney the Elders, bought one of them

I have drank a lot of Pliny the Elder (and several vintages of its rarer limited annual release ~11% triple IPA sibling "the Younger") and the former is more or less the quintessential IPA.  In fact, it's strong enough to be considered a double IPA, and when it's fresh it features a right proper balance between very subtle malt sweetness (it's actually a fairly dry and crisp ale) alongside strong hop bitterness that also retains some spicey/herbal/floral elements of a late hop boil addition and dry hop.

It's a good beer from an excellent brewery, but given that it has achieved cult-like status, it's important to check one's expectations and realize that there are lots of other great IPA's out there for the imbibing.  All the same, it is nice when you find it, and I can totally empathize with Mick's expressed excitement from his central Californian experience landing on the case of the good stuff.  No shortage of quality brews up and down the west coast these days, but for sure Russian River was a pioneer who continues to produce exceptional beer.

Does anyone have recommendations for sweet malty beers? I've been a bit sick of IPAs lately, things that are heavily bittered. I kinda want something that is crisp and somewhat light, but sweet. American lagers probably too light in that regard, but something like the German Paulaner lager is what I'm thinking of, with a slight sweet aftertaste.

I had the Allagash tripel, and that is probably a bit too far in maltyness for me - it tasted carmelly and like sweet bread, which was interesting, but since it was a 9% beer the flavor was a bit too strong. A minor version of that carmel/bread type flavor is what I'm looking for.

The thai beer singha I think has the right bread notes. I like it and I can get it as individual bottles at local thai restaurants, but I can't buy packs of it. So I'm looking for something more widely available.

I tend to shy away from sweet beers, unless I'm trying some stout, fruited or other experimental beer.  Not much of a sweet tooth on me... but by the sounds of what you just wrote, I would suggest trying some Irish red style ales and maybe some brown ales, as they tend to dial back on the bitterness and lean into their maltiness while retaining an overall dry or semi-dry approach, alongside a bit of roasty/toasty flavor depending on the offering and the specific choice of malts used.

As they aren't nearly as popular of a style generally, you'll just have to experiment with whatever might be available near you, but if you're in the Los Angeles area, I would suggest San Fernando Brewing's O'Melveny Red ale as one of my current favorites for something malt forward that isn't too sweet and still retains a good balanced hop character.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not in the LA area so may not be able to get that beer. But when I tried a red ale from one of my local breweries, I remember really liking it. And I tried a scottish ale too, which was pleasant. I'll definitely look into that style.

How would you describe the taste of Pliny the elder?

I wanted to wait until I was drinking it to respond to this. Am drinking it now, this being my third after two nice pours of scotch (as a warning:D)

It tastes, almost exactly like Geo described. The most classic version of an IPA. Literally fills your mouth with hops. There’s almost a maltiness at work, like a creamy finish which rounds out all the bitter elements of the hops. I should put it in the freezer to drop maybe 10f cooler, and I think it would absolutely shine.

You can tell there’s some alcohol behind each drink, but it’s pleasant. There’s not a single element that I think while experiencing that this could have been done better. It might be one of the best IPAs I’ve ever had.

Fucking A this is an amazing beer. Even the aftertaste is just a reminder that it’s probably time to take another nice drink.

This is absolutely worth the investment, if you want to hunt it down. My only suggestion is get it nice and cold, but not frozen.

You mentioning a Scottish ale brought back a lot of memories of drinking Innis and Gunn with my buddy. It’s been years since I had it, might have to do a beer run this weekend.

Aged in single malt barrels.. that sounds amazing. A beer with whisky notes. And it looks like they have it at my local liquor store.

Last Saturday, I had the absolute pleasure of trying a new Pale Ale on draft at the Fair (I love the Fair!).

Its called the Backwoods Dreamsicle Pale Ale:

It had a IBU rating of 10. I have to say, I usually hate bitter things but the subtle bitter taste of this beer made the smooth, delicate Dreamsicle taste even better. It was just the right amount! Easily one of the best beers Ive ever had 🧡🥇🏆

Yeah ipas are bitter by nature, but you snagged yourself a relatively timid one! Sounds like it would be delicious and go down so easy.
For reference if that draft was a 10.
I'm often found drinking ipas with ibu in the 30 or 40 range and well on up!
Def uncharacteristic for ipa, and my only  guess is relatively minimal hops. Bc I believe hops provide most of the bitter. I love hoppy beers that's why I fell in love with ipas I guess

Yeah an IBU of 10 is basically a Budweiser on the bitter scale (Bud clocks in @ 12 IBU's actually).

To be fair... a "backwoods dreamsicle" sounds epic in its own right, despite whatever bitterness it may embody! :yesnod:

I had the chance to try a Pliny the Elder last week. It was one of my favorite IPAs I've had! It didn't taste bitter to me. It had a really complex mix of different hops flavors - some fruitiness, some light herbalness, some pine. It was one of the most diverse flavors I've had from an IPA, and it seems this flavor all comes from the types of hops they use. They use four different kinds according to their website!

It was smoother and easier to drink than its abv would suggest.

Pliny the Elder must have an amazingly good reputation considering it is one of very few things I've seen with a 100% rating on beer advocate, a website I use sometimes to read reviews. That means almost everyone rated it perfect or close to perfect. Even amazing renown beers I've seen at 93% there, but Pliny the Elder is a 100%.

Nice man! Alway fun to get a random pliney treat

I recall seeing it highly rated too, and at the top of the hill at one time. Though now there are a group of stouts that seem to have taken over.

They have those at my local store. Maybe I'll pick them up when I buy beer next.

Aren't pilsners sort of like a lighter, cleaner lager?

Edit: Looks like some sources say they are more bitter and spicy than lagers.

Pilsners are lagers, with the name pilsner coming from Pilsen in Germany where the first pilsner, Pilsner Urquell, was crafted.  Lager refers to the beer being fermented with bottom fermenting yeast that can operate at sustained cold temperatures, whereas ales are generally fermented at ambient temperatures with yeasts that rise to the top of the wort when they are most active.  Lagering tends to produce a drink with less esters (fruity flavors) and phenolics (spicy flavors), when compared to ales.  European pilsners tend to be more richly flavored than American iterations, as American pilsners often use corn and/or rice as adjuncts to the malted barley.

I'll give it a try, the one you recommended, nightdad.

My experience with European lagers has been positive, because they to me had a much deeper bread flavor than the American kind. But the American lager I had, Coors, while it was still refreshing, was almost as close to water as beer could get. Pabst had a bit more depth of flavor, a subtle tangy element, but still tasted extremely watery, almost like it was watered down.

I gave Pilsner Urquell a try. I liked it overall and it's an interesting unique flavor. It had a sour flavor especially as an aftertaste that was definitely one of a kind, but wasn't my favorite. Still extremely flavorful despite 4.4% ABV. Overall I'd recommend it.

Also, I want to recommend a new offering in stores, Oktoberfest festbier by Sierra nevada - a collaboration of german and American brewers. It is the malt style of a german beer and a hopping style reminiscient of mild pale ales (using both German-style and American-style hops). A unique flavor, and a great creamy taste in my opinion. One of my favorites.

I actually posted a review of that one earlier, one of my all-time favorites.

Quote:

Crisp, not-too-malty and has this slightly yeasty note that's hard to describe, but complex.
...

I should go a grab one again, they have the tall cans at my grocery store. Not right now though. Had a bad hangover yesterday and seeking to drink a lot less, lately.

I have been eyeing those beers at the local shop for a while now... Welp, finally time to bite the bullet on the price and give them a try. Thank you for the suggestion!

I can't find a lot of my favorite beers lately. I've asked at multiple stores and they all say it's because of their distributors
Might have to try ordering them online...

Luckily Flying Dog is still always available, great beer and not too pricey (not to mention I have an obsession with Ralph Steadman artwork).
Their imperial IPA "The Truth" is my absolute favorite, followed closely by "Raging Bitch".

I stumbled upon milkshake beers a couple years ago, but they seem to be losing popularity unfortunately.
Full Circle Brewing makes a vanilla milkshake IPA that I was hooked on, but haven't seen them on the shelves in a while.

This is the heaviest fruity milkshake IPA I've ever tried. Overpowering to a point if it's not chilled in the freezer, but pretty damn good served ice cold.

(The head on these is ridiculous. Every can overflows as soon as it's opened, even from different batches)

Saisons came into my life by random chance also, I bought a variety pack from the same company that included a strawberry saison that was amazing.
Angry Horse Brewing's "Purple AF" saison is really tasty as well, but again, haven't seen them on the shelves in a while.

(Ignore the sour ale on the right, it had a very odd flavor. I've tried getting into the sours, but my stomach doesn't like them for some reason.)

Anywho, that's all folks!
Hope you all are having a wonderful Saturday

And really proper mixed culture saisons.  Get out of here with that acetic crap.

Mixed culture? Do you mean multiple yeast lines?

Today I am drinking a 750ml bottle of Foret, an offering from the famous Belgian brewer Dupont. It is a bottle-conditioned saison boasting of all organic ingredients. I think the organic thing is a gimmick here, but I love the tangy yeast flavor. I prefer this stronger ale to the standard Saison Dupont.

I have had few beers I like near so much as dupont beers... I have to think their unique yeast lines have something to do with that. They recycle the yeasts, as is typical in traditional farmhouse ales, meaning they use yeasts that aren't used anywhere else in the world.

They might be a bit harder to come by, but I love Boon's line of kriek beers. They have that nice and deep cherry flavor, without being overly sweet. Sometimes I'll even prefer Oude Kriek, which is also a cherry beer but really (and I mean really) banks on the sour note. Sour beers tend to be a love it or hate type of deal though.

Italian pils is one of my favorite styles right now. It's really just a pils dry hopped with saphir and hallertau mittelfru. Crisp and nice taste of hops without being overwhelming.
